Roastee: Zsa Zsa Gabor Air date: January 10, 1974 Roasters: Donald O'Connor, Charles Nelson Reilly, Sue Cameron, Corbett Monica, Donna Fargo, Lonnie Schorr, Ruth Buzzi, Buddy Hackett, Mel Tillis The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast was a television show hosted by entertainer Dean Martin from 1974 to 1984. Patterned after the roasts held at the New York Friars' Club in New York City, the format would have the celebrity guest seated at a banquet table and, one by one, the guest of honor was affectionately chided or insulted about his career by his fellow celebrity friends. The final season (1973--74) of The Dean Martin Show was retooled into one of celebrity roasts in an effort to boost ratings. The roasts were popular with television audiences. After The Dean Martin Show was cancelled in 1974, NBC drew up a contract with Martin to do more roast specials. Starting with Bob Hope, the event was taped in California and turned out to be a hit, leading to many other roasts to follow. In the fall of 1974, the roasts moved permanently to the MGM Grand Hotel's Ziegfeld Room in Las Vegas. The "Roastees" were also referred to as "Man of the Hour" or "Woman of the Hour" ("Man of the Week" in earlier episodes). George Washington was the only person honored posthumously, for the United States bicentennial. Excellent compilation show from 1992! Special mention for the Joanna Lumley section, this was the first time Rube & JoJo Lumers met on screen (I think), it's just before Joanna started on AbFab, she had short, dark hair, and was in a massive career 'dip' if I remember rightly. It's really funny, and I have the other shows with Ms Lumley to follow ;-) Also features Terry Wogan, Jennifer Saunders, Joan Rivers, Mo Gaffney/ Taffy Turner, Torvill & Dean and the now almost forgotten Louis Anderson. Not great audio sorry, I did my best to improve it with Power Director. This type of sound usually means it was recorded in Long Play/ LP rather than Standard Play/ SP. Enjoy!

Fun with Zsazh & the meaning of life with Ram. Poor sound & picture in a few spots but it's mainly OK, and I've improved the image & audio as much as I can. If you hang in to the very end there was a Dr Terror clip taped right after this, so I've just left it on. If you don't know 'him' he introduced bad horror films, on late night, usually Friday's BBC2 for quite a few years, it was a great idea, and done very well. Enjoy!
