White Supremacist Group Members Arrested in Orlando
Ten suspects linked to the American Front white supremacist group were planning an attack on Jews, immigrants and minorities in Central Florida, the Orlando Sentinel reported. According to an affidavit obtained by the newspaper, the suspects discussed making ricin, a deadly poison, and were targeting Orlando City Hall. The ten were arrested after the FBI raided their Florida camp, authorities said. The last three arrests came after seven people were taken into custody this past weekend on felony charges that fall under the state's hate crime law, Florida television station WFTV reported. An extensive report in Tuesday's paper looks at the use of targeted attacks to take out terrorism suspects in other parts of the world, an increasingly important part of the government's anti-terrorism policies that Barack Obama himself has taken personal responsibility for. According to the story, the President approves every name on the list of terrorism targets, reviewing their biographies and the evidence against them, and then authorizing "lethal action without hand-wringing." As the president has slowly drawn down American forces in Afghanistan and Iraq, the use of drone attacks to take out senior leaders of al-Qaeda and the Taliban has become the primary tactic for fighting terrorism overseas. Via The Huffington Post: "A day before Congress weighs an amendment to end indefinite military detentions in the US, a federal judge Wednesday ruled the law that allows the practice unconstitutional. Saying the measure has "chilling impact on First Amendment rights," US District Judge Katherine Forrest, of New York's Eastern District, found that a group of reporters and activists who brought the lawsuit had no way of knowing whether they could be subjected to it. That makes it an unconstitutional infringement on the First Amendment's free speech right and the Fifth Amendment's right to due process, Forrest said in a written opinion. Phillip Phillips wins American Idol 2012 Phillip Phillips, a bluesy Georgia guitar man, has been crowned the new American Idol after defeating teenager Jessica Sanchez in record viewer voting. He was the fifth male Idol winner in a row. Phillips, 21, a pawn shop worker from Leesburg, Georgia, looked stunned after host Ryan Seacrest announced his name, and then wordlessly accepted a hug from Sanchez and congratulations from his fellow finalists. He dissolved into tears as he sang Homem the song that may be his first single. Phillips received the winning share of the record-high 132m votes cast after his final showdown with high school student Sanchez, 16, of Chula Vista, California. The vote count was not announced. His victory extends the American Idol winning streak for men to five consecutive seasons. The last female to win was 17-year-old Jordin Sparks in 2007. Sparks was among the guest stars who helped fill out the two-hour finale show, among them Rihanna, Neil Diamond, Reba McEntire, Chaka Khan and John Fogarty.
