China's Most Honourable City (Ancient Xi'an) - part 1-5

Xian, the world's biggest city at one time and the birthplace of many engineering and architectural marvels of ancient China, is resurrected with computer animation, dramatizations and scientific revelations reliving the glory of its long-lost past. A massive, near-impenetrable wall encloses the ancient city of Xian, the starting point of the Silk Road route from China into Europe. Made from a base layer of earth, quick lime, and glutinous rice extract and further fortified by a layer of bricks, the strong wall snakes around the city at a length of 13.7 kilometres. Besides being an engineering achievement, the wall is also believed to be the world's largest and most complete ancient military defense system that remains intact today. MAN MADE MARVELS: CHINA'S FORGOTTEN CITY goes behind the walls of this fortress to provide invaluable insight into the military science and architecture of the Ming Dynasty.

Preserving the Terracotta Warriors of Xian

Over 8000 terracotta soldiers were buried alongside an ancient Chinese Emperor, 2200 years ago. When the burial chambers were discovered in 1974, it was hailed as one of the world's great archeological finds. However after being uncovered, the warriors became vulnerable to fungi, which threatened to destroy them. A Johnson & Johnson company, Janssen Pharmaceutica in Xian, China, provided anti-fungal solutions to help solve the problem and preserve this historic wonder.

It appears as though a hole suddenly swallows her up. But it's her rescue that has citizens of Shaanxi Province buzzing. A cab driver who witnessed the shocking incident rushed to the hole to find the girl lying at the bottom of a 18-foot deep well. The site had long been eroded by underground water, forming a big hole in the middle of the sidewalk. The cabbie jumped in the pit to help the girl, but both had to be pulled to the surface by firefighters. Family members used this video to help track down the hero to thank him for his good deed.

[Naxos 2.110554] CHINESE MUSICAL JOURNEY (A) - XI'AN

Naxos DVD Trailer: A Cultural Tour with Traditional Chinese Music The capital of Shaanxi Province, Xi'an, its name translating as 'Western Peace', was the Chinese capital during the Tang dynasty (618-906 AD). The Big Wild Goose Pagoda, completed in 704 on the orders of the Empress Wu Zetain during her period of rule as Empress of the Zhou dynasty, soon replaced by the restored Tang, is one of the oldest such structures in China. Of particular interest is the tomb of the Emperor Huang, regarded as the founder of the unified Chinese nation, and the remarkable terracotta warriors and horses discovered around the mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang Di, founder of the Qin dynasty who died in 210 BC. The tour ends with vies of the precipitous Huashan (Flower Mountain), so called from its five peaks, groups in the shape of a great flower. The music chosen for this tour of Xi'an is played on traditional Chinese instruments. The excerpts include, to accompany the terracotta warriors, a contemporary composition inspired by Zhang Ji's poem 'Night at the Maple Bridge' giving particular prominence to the zhongruan, a form of Chinese lute of ancient origin. Other instruments heard are the Chinese transverse bamboo flute, the dizi, the Chinese plucked zither, the guqin, and the Chinese lute, the pipa. A glimpse of operatic stage performance finds a place for a Shaanxi opera tune, an example of the music to be heard in the many regional forms of Chinese opera.
