Christopher Hitchens Advice for Writers

Every day, the New York Times carries a motto in a box on its front page. "All the News That's Fit to Print," it says. It's been saying it for decades, day in and day out. I imagine most readers of the canonical sheet have long ceased to notice this bannered and flaunted symbol of its mental furniture. I myself check every day to make sure that the bright, smug, pompous, idiotic claim is still there. Then I check to make sure that it still irritates me. If I can still exclaim, under my breath, why do they insult me and what do they take me for and what the hell is it supposed to mean unless it's as obviously complacent and conceited and censorious as it seems to be, then at least I know I still have a pulse. You may wish to choose a more rigorous mental workout but I credit this daily infusion of annoyance with extending my lifespan. "Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the 'transcendent' and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don't be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish. Picture all experts as if they were mammals. Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity. Seek out argument and disputation for their own sake; the grave will supply plenty of time for silence. Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you." — Christopher Hitchens English-born author and journalist whose books, essays, and ...

There's not really an easy way to explain how anyone writes a book. It's like trying to explain how to fall in love, you can't really put it into words or instructions well. A book usually just starts off with you wandering around in a mess of potential ideas in your head and, picking one to go with, then deciding that one isn't right, then chasing after another one and finding out that one's not right either. And then suddenly, from nowhere, comes this idea that you didn't expect at all, and it just hits you like a train, and suddenly you're obsessed with writing it down, and going into the backstories of ever tiny character and planning out histories and futures and worlds ...

How to write like an architect

howtoarchitect.com www.powhow.com Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com! Hi Im Doug Patt and this is how to architect. Today well learn How to write like an architect. The basic drafting tool for an architect when working by hand is a parallel rule. You can also use a t-square. Ill be using an ames lettering guide to create the lines for the lettering. First were going to create our horizontal lines using the lettering guide. The guide has a variety of spacing options to create just about any combination your looking for. I will also be using a small triangle. Ive added tape to this one for ink lettering to avoid smearing. Ill also be using a .5mm pentel drafting pencil and a paper mate, flair pen for the letters. Ive created a small grid here to give me some guidance when I lay out the letters. Id say the most important thing to remember about hand lettering is that your letters need to seem animated while still appearing orderly and neat. I think this is achieved by using a few conventions. For example, youll notice the letters have some amount of incompleteness. The second diagonal on the A does not follow all the way to the guide line, the bottom of the B or D isnt complete, The bottom line on the E starts in front of the vertical. The second thing is that all the horizontals in the letters are drawn by hand, not using the parallel rule. They all sit at a slight angle making them dynamic and yet uniform. Youll also notice that I use the ruler for all ...

So You Want to Write? One Author's Perspective

What does it take to get started as an author? Science fiction author David Brin (The Postman, Startide Rising) offers advice to aspiring writers. Storytelling is the only verified form of magic; the ability to form incantations in the listerner's mind, to have them envision imaginary worlds, to feel profound emotions. Brin tells you the key aspect of the relationship between a writer and the readers -- a sadomasochistic one! You want your readers to be so engaged with the text that they are unable to put the book down...even at the risk of being late for work or missing a class. The only way to gauge your progress is to seek criticism from readers. This is hard to do, but you must distribute your manuscript widely (beyond friends and family members) to see where people were bored or confused; to find where they found your characters' actions inconsistent or implausible. Getting feedback is the surest way to improve your work. For more information about David Brin, visit his website: www.davidbrin.com Twitter: twitter.com Facebook: www.facebook.com
