British Armed Forces Bands in Wootton Bassett, 12 October 08
INFORMATION UPDATED 16 JULY 2009. Since 2007, the funeral corteges of fallen British servicemen and women repatriated through RAF Lyneham have passed through Wootton Bassett. Every time, the town's dignitaries and residents have lined the street in silent respect as the cortege passes through. This parade is the armed forces' "Thank You" to the town. Letter published in The Guardian Newspaper, 16 July 2009: Sir We who represent the people of the town of Wootton Bassett, are honoured and humbled that the way we have paid our respects to our fallen soldiers in every weather and for upwards of two years now has touched people in the way it has, and that in a way we stand proxy for the grief of the nation. But we are simply the ordinary people of a very special town standing still and quiet for a few moments in a mark of sorrow and gratitude for those who have given their lives in service of the Nation. We welcome people from all over the country who come to join us, and we are proud that the national media has broadcast our moment's stillness to the world, although we'd be grateful for slightly less intrusive media coverage in the future. We welcome visiting generals and senior politicians, if they would like to come, and simply mingle with the crowds. But we'd prefer no pomp, nor militarization. Its the people of the town; no more nor less than that. Whats more, as a town, we'd much prefer that there was no further discussion of any recognition for what we do, or at least ...

Wootton Bassett - Job Done
31st August 2011. Wootton Bassett marked the end of repatriations this evening with a moving sunset ceremony that saw the Union Flag lowered for the final time. Hundreds gathered in the High Street of the Wiltshire town - known as the Highway for Heroes - for the ceremony which included prayers and a speech from the town's mayor. David Cameron also offered a 'heartfelt thank you' to the people of the town for honouring fallen British troops during the past four years. Speaking during a visit to Oxford, the Prime Minister said: 'My message to the people of Wootton Bassett is a really big, heartfelt thank you on behalf of the Government and the whole country.' Mr. Cameron said the town's residents 'have done our country proud with the respect and admiration and passion they have shown for our Armed Forces and those who have tragically fallen in battle in Afghanistan and elsewhere. 'I think they have done a magnificent job. I was delighted when Her Majesty decided to rename Wootton Bassett as Royal Wootton Bassett. I think it is thoroughly deserved although it is not something the people of Wootton Bassett ever asked for. They are very public-spirited people.' Since the RAF base at Lyneham began repatriation duties in 2007, the residents have lined the streets 167 times as the bodies of 345 soldiers returned to the UK. Now the ceremonies will take take place in the Oxfordshire town of Carterton, close to the RAF Brize Norton base where bodies will be flown to.
Wootton Bassett-25th February 2010
Wootton Bassett. 25th February 2010. Lieutenant Douglas Dalzell from 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards was killed in Afghanistan on Thursday 18th February, 2010 - which was his 27th birthday. Lt Dalzell, known as Dougie, came from Hamstead Marshall, near Newbury, in Berkshire. He was serving as part of Combined Force Nahr-e Saraj (South) and was killed by a bomb blast in the Babaji area of Nahr-e Saraj in central Helmand. Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said: "He was involved in operations as part of Operation Moshtarak to clear insurgents to the south west of Patrol Base 4 in the Babaji area of Nahr-e Saraj in central Helmand so that a checkpoint could be built and a road laid through the area, thereby bringing enduring security and freedom of movement to local people. "He died in the course of his duty and among his comrades; his courage and sacrifice will be remembered." Lieutenant Dalzell joined the Army in 2007, commissioning into the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards in December of that year. PUBLIC DOMAIN News item. www.lastingtribute.co.uk
Wootton Bassett... 2011 Ride of respect
Ride of respect Wootton Bassett 2011... Wootton Bassett Ride Of Respect: How It All Began . . . On the 7th January 2010 an 18 year old girl called Lizzie Stevens put out a call on "Facebook" for anyone who was interested on going for a bike ride to Wootton Bassett. Julia Stevenson replied immediately with an offer of assistance. Overwhelmed with the already 15 strong response and the inevitable organisation involved, young Lizzie was grateful for the offer of help from Julia, but at this point she decided to pull out from the ride altogether and so asked Julia if she would take over the ride to Wootton Bassett. So in at the deep end, Julia all of a sudden had an entire ride to plan, on her own. Little did she know of what was to follow! The first step for Julia Stevenson was to organise a date. The 14th of March came to mind, mid month, which coincidently happened to be Mother's Day and latter was to become very appropriate indeed. The idea of a charity ride quickly came about, but to what charity? After a google search for "Heroes" Afghan Heroes was the first hit, a charity put together by a group of mothers who had lost their sons at war in Afghanistan, the perfect collaboration. The announcement of the revised ride created an astonishing response and within days there were 1000's who wanted to participate. So much for a little jaunt down to Wootton Bassett for Julia & friends!!! Julia Stevenson, with her good friend Steve Dennis by her side, took the bull by the horns ...
