Pyeongchang defeated rivals Munich and Annecy, France, on Wednesday in the first round of a secret ballot of the International Olympic Committee. The Koreans had lost narrowly in previous bids for the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. Pyeongchang will be the first city in Asia outside Japan to host the Winter Games. Japan held the games in Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998.

As Russia's city of Sochi gears up for the winter Olympics, some of the biggest stars of winter sports have gathered at the resort to test out the slopes. The resort is hosting a leg of the Alpine Skiing World Cup. Preparing pistes for the race was a challenge due to sudden heavy fog and blizzard. Various worldwide calls of the game winning goal by Sidney Crosby in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games gold medal ice hockey final. MP3 Version Download: docs.google.com Newer MP3 Version: Has more broadcasts plus the radio call from Peter Maher. docs.google.com Couple of Notes: If you listen in each clip you'll hear Crosby yelling "Iggy!" for Iginla to feed him the pass, hence the title. I thought everyone knew about that part. The France TV broadcast included a broadcaster from Quebec, so I'm sure part of the exuberance of the whole crew was from him. The BBC call after the goal is "It's taken a while for him to come to the party... he can celebrate, Canada can celebrate." I had to get friends from around the world to capture these sound bytes so it's why a lot of countries are missing. I would have loved to get more of the hockey nations, Russia, Slovakia, Finland etc.

Ice hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics was held at Canada Hockey Place, home of the National Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks, and at UBC Winter Sports Centre, home of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport's UBC Thunderbirds. Twelve teams competed in the men's event and eight teams in the women's event. The 2010 Games were the first in Olympic history where the medalling countries in the men's and women's hockey tournaments were identical. Canada won both tournaments with victories against the United States, while Finland won both bronze games, however against different opponents. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and US President Barack Obama, through their respective spokesmen, Dimitri Soudas and Robert Gibbs, made friendly wagers on the outcome of the mens' gold medal game. As Team Canada won, Harper received a case of Molson Canadian from Obama on March 19, along with a case of Obama's favourite American beer, Yuengling both delivered in person to 24 Sussex Drive by US Ambassador David Jacobson and both to be donated to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.[1] In settlement of a separate bet, Gibbs wore a Team Canada jersey at his press briefing on March 12, subsequently revealing a Team USA jersey under it.
