Davey James - Short Film on Bass & Drum Touring Setup
www.daveyjames.ca In this Short by Toronto, Independent Filmmaker Brownie, Instrumentalist Davey James discusses his love of rhythm and his unique style for delivering it. At age 15, Davey started playing the drums with rock music in mind. To him at the time, the faster and louder the better. His first drumkit was an old beat up marching snare and six trash cans. He grew up in Sugar land, Texas. Once he started getting serious about playing drums he moved to New Orleans to study with Johnny Vidacovich. With John he learned how to improvise in all styles of music. He then spent the next three years studying the physics of funk, the art of the laying it down and digesting soulful rhythms from some of the funkiest drummers on the planet. After graduating he moved to Los Angeles to study Ghanian Music and his free time was spent working in the music industry (Interscope Records and American Recordings) and touring America and Europe. He is currently finishing his PhD in ethnomusicology and holds a Masters of Fine Art in World Music from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). He also holds a Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies from Loyola University New Orleans and studied music in film at the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico. Today, Davey is a multi-instrumentalist whose background producing, engineering, coaching artists and performing has led to his involvement in several projects, recordings and performances.
