To complete this How-To you will need: Clean fingers A mouth A mirror Step 1: Position fingers Form a U shape with your thumb and forefinger or middle finger. Tip: Use a mirror to perfect your form and technique. Step 2: Place in mouth Place your fingers partly inside your mouth, wrapping your lips tightly across your teeth. Only the outer edges of your lips should be visible. Tip: Angle fingertips toward the center of your tongue. Step 3: Position tongue Flatten your tongue to cover the bottom portion of your mouth. The tip of your tongue will touch the lower jaw just behind the bottom row of teeth. Step 4: Blow Inhale deeply and blow forcefully across the top of your tongue and lower lip. Push your fingers downward and outward, onto your lips and teeth. Step 5: Adjust positions Adjust the position of your fingers, tongue, and jaw for optimal whistling. Whistled language of the island of La Gomera (Canary Islands), the Silbo Gomero
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The whistled language of La Gomera Island in the Canaries, the Silbo Gomero, replicates the islanders habitual language (Castilian Spanish) with whistling. Handed down over centuries from master to pupil, it is the only whistled language in the world that is fully developed and practised by a large community (more than 22000 inhabitants). The whistled language replaces each vowel or consonant with a whistling sound: two distinct whistles replace the five Spanish vowels, and there are four whistles for consonants. The whistles can be distinguished according to pitch and whether they are interrupted or continuous. With practice, whistlers can convey any message. Some local variations even point to their origin. Taught in schools since 1999, the Silbo Gomero is understood by almost all islanders and practised by the vast majority, particularly the elderly and the young. It is also used during festivities and ceremonies, including religious occasions. To prevent it from disappearing like the other whistled languages of the Canary Islands, it is important to do more for its transmission and promote the Silbo Gomero as intangible cultural heritage cherished by the inhabitants of La Gomera and the Canary Islands as a whole. This is a compilation of clips of the Planes of Fame Museum's Corsair (Chino, California) and includes some clips of the Palm Springs Air Museum's own Corsair. Man, this thing just scoots, BIG TIME! Wow, just awesome! Listen to the 2000 horsepower generated by the 2800 cubic inches of the supercharged, 18 cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-2800! You'll see during the flybys why the Japanese called this fighter the "Whistling Death." This aircraft just leaps off the runway in just a few seconds, and remember, the manifold pressure used today for takeoff with 100-octane low-lead fuel is not anywhere near what could be used with the wartime, 130-octane+ fuel. Very impressive!

To complete this How-To you will need: Lips Fingers Step 1: Wash your hands Wash your hands. Step 2: Shape your lips Stretch your lips over your teeth, covering them completely. Tip: Keep your lips relaxed. Step 3: Choose a finger style Choose a finger style. Use your index fingers, middle fingers, or pinkies and keep a small gap between the tips. Step 4: Position fingers Position your fingers between your lips so that they are in the center of your mouth. Extend your fingers into your mouth to the first knuckle and point the tips toward the back of your mouth. Step 5: Position the tongue Flatten your tongue to the bottom of your mouth. Hold the tip a centimeter behind your lower gums. Step 6: Whistle Blow so the air travels over the top of your tongue and over your bottom lip through the gap in your fingers. Ron Garan: Once the hatch was closed, and the air started to get sucked out of the airlock, I decided it would be fun to see if I could whistle at reduced pressure. This was reminiscent of my time living on the bottom of the ocean during the NEEMO-9 mission when it took me a few weeks to re-learn how to whistle at the higher pressure of 2 ½ atmospheres. It was just an innocent curiosity but it received a lot of media attention. I was able to whistle until the pressure inside my spacesuit was just too low for me to make any sound come out.
