The idea is that the chickens can stay warmer and, thus, require less winter feed. Next, Marina and Robert of Dell Artimus Farm talk about their year round chicken coop that is winterized with straw bales. They keep woodchips under the coop and they think the composting heat helps to warm the chickens. Free range pigs visit a lot during the video. You probably have heard of the Recursive Wil Wheaton Recursive t-shirt. Paul (of Paul and Storm) sent it to Wil and this photo became quite popular. It was remixed by an unknown genius into an animated gif and "won at the internet". Over the weekend i experimented with the new PointCloud Augmented Reality SDK (which is by the way brilliant and simple: 3D tracking and HTML5). I took Recursive Wil and turned the concept around: A Wil Wheaton Particle Emitter. Scott Meyer from basicinstructions.net sent me the original SVG file of the shirt. My first try was using Processing.js for animation (Yes! Processing.js now works in AR). But SVG and CSS 3D were the better choice to get a perspective effect. And it's hardware accelerated on iOS.

They've had snow on the ground for months, and have seen a fair bit of sub zero temperatures. And they stay warm all day with just one small fire each day. We talk about how warm we feel indoors 19 hours after the last fire was burned. This wood burning stove has some enhancements over other rocket mass heaters in that it has a barrel top that will come off, plus the barrel has an extension at the bottom. The heat riser core is made of firebrick. After a couple months of use you can see the ash build up inside. slug control: ducks in the garden
www.permies.com A lot of gardeners struggle with slugs. Slugs will eat all of a garden, in some areas, if left unchecked. And yet, ducks love to eat slugs! So this is definitely an organic slug control method. I have tried on about four previous occassions to get video of ducks or geese eating slugs, but the video always turned out iffy you couldn't quite see it. Or the ducks/geese go squeemish - so they were so far away you couldn't see them eat the slugs in the video. I kept trying and eventually ended up with this excellent video footage. First we hear from Jen Davis, of Portland, Oregon. This is just a tiny bit that she had to say about controlling slugs. She expresses that she doesn't like to kill slugs without purpose. Having the ducks eat the slugs makes her much more comfortable. She talks about how her chickens weren't all that interested in eating slugs. With her current ducks, they eat so many slugs, that she now breeds slugs to feed to her ducks! Samantha from Woodinville, Washington feeds HUGE slugs to her ducks. We get really good video of the ducks eating the slugs out of her hand. That is a huge woodpecker at the end. Bill Mollison, the inventor of permaculture, is famous for saying something like "you don't have an excess of slugs, you have a duck deficiency."
