Cook Strait Giant Weta on Somes Island
Atalie with a Cook Strait Giant Weta on Somes Island. We found quite a few as we walked around the island. We also saw tuatara and a little blue penguin. It had been raining earlier in the day which we believe contributed to so many giant weta and tuatara coming onto the path. It was quite a cold and windy night (hence Atalie having a shirt tied around her head).

Weta - HRYC Double Dammed 2011
Here's a 4 minute video of the Weta trimaran racing the Double Dammed race on the Colombia River, hosted by the Hood River Yacht Club. This section is one of the windiest parts of the race at the hatchery with gusts over 35kts and big waves. After the jibe in this sequence, a big gust hits and the boat excellerates to about 20 knots boat speed. There were 22 boats racing, all keelboats; Melges 23 & Moore 24. The Weta was the only dinghy/multihull entered. We were the third boat to finish with a time of 4:21.17. David Berntsen (Sausalito, CA) and Ethan Salkind (Seattle, WA) sailors.

Weta West Coast Championships@ StFYC NOOD 2010
June 26 & 27th, StFYC / Sperry Topsider NOOD Regatta in San Francisco Bay. A fleet of 9 Wetas competed in the first annual Weta West Coast Championships. The race course was off Treasure Island right in the middle of "The Slot" in SF bay with winds ranging from 18 - 15kts. Chris Kitchen (Weta New Zealand) won the regatta with 8 bullets followed by David Berntsen (WetaWest - US West Coast Dealer) and Bob Hyde in third place. Bob is the first Weta owner in San Francisco and has been active in building the fleet since 2008. Enthusiastic Weta fleets are growing throughout the US with 70+ new boats being delivered in the US (including Hawaii) in 2010. Stunning images of New Zealand www.nhc.net.nz New Zealand home of "The Lord of the Rings" was the last large landmass to be discovered as seen in the Pure New Zealand video. Resultant of developing in isolation we have thousands of unique species. GB has only two as a comparison. 11% of the world's endangered species are from New Zealand. Weta are nocturnal and live in a variety of habitats including grassland, shrub land, forests, and caves. They excavate holes under stones, rotting logs, or in trees and sometimes occupy pre-formed burrows. Many of the giant species now only survive on protected land and many are endangered. The Giant Weta is the heaviest insect on earth reliably weighed at 72g. The Mahoenui giant weta, long considered extinct on the mainland, was rediscovered in a patch of King Country gorse in 1962. Department of Conservation staff have established a new population of these on Mahurangi Island, off the Coromandel coast. Two hundred have been transferred there and after four years they are showing signs of breeding. Weta are mainly herbivorous in the wild, but are also known to eat insects. There are more than 70 species of weta in New Zealand, 16 of which are at risk. They are one of the oldest species with fossils dating back to the Triassic period. Music is by New Zealand artists Pitch Black who produce for sony playstation and Miami CSI.

WTHR explains. "Here is the world's largest insect. There you go. Now, if you see there, that insect is sitting in the palm of a man's hand, filling his hand, and he's chewing on a carrot there. This is called a giant weta. He has a wingspan of close to seven inches, and this one here was caught on camera by a world-renowned entomologist, Mark Moffet..." Moffett said he spent several nights searching New Zealand's Little Barrier Island before he found the huge bug. He fed it a carrot so it would hold still for picture taking. That's quite a bug lover. Most people who saw the photos probably had the same reaction as Neil Patrick Harris on ABC's LIVE! With Kelly. Kelly Ripa: "That is..." Neil Patrick Harris: "Guh!
