Welsh Anthem - Millenium Stadium
When I was a boy growing up in the 60's/70's, I used to listen to the BBC broadcasts of 5 Nations rugby matches. Two things stand out in my memory -- the incomparable Bill McLaren broadcasting the match, and the crowd at the old Arms Park in Cardiff, singing the national anthem. In those days -- just massed voices. With the encroachment of the 'professional era' (and lots of related marketing hype), WRU has tended to bringing in over-amped 'stars' to lead the anthem (eg, Ms. Jenkins, Mr. Terfel). Alas, all for ought, in my book -- nothing -- and I mean nothing -- raises the hairs on your neck like the crowd, singing alone. This is a fair representation of what I remember (true, the new stadium, but one last gasp at the old passion).

I cannot play the crwth(I must first state this as I could set back the Crwth revival by 20 years!! If you want to see/hear how it should be played see www.bradgod.com or google Cass meurig!!) I played this for a few minutes before packing it off for a customer. I only had a simple Psaltery bow on hand which isn't really the best way to showcase this instrument either!! But I felt a few people would be interested and may be motivated into exploring this instrument further. Its a copy of the Richard Evans Welsh Crwth of 1742. The original is carved from a single plank with a separate soundboard, but mine has a body built-up like a violin.

WELSH Guard plays "Darth Vader" for Saudi King
During a recent Royal visit (I'm assuming this was around January 2008), the Royal Guard puts their dark WELSH sense humour into play... They accompanied Saudi Sheik's King Abdullah arrival with the "Imperial theme of Darth Vader" from STAR WARS.. Hahaha! The first two minutes of this clip are funny, but the 'debate' sequence dragged-on a bit. But I'll let you be the judge of that. Enjoy!
