Big day at The Wedge -- July 24, 2009
Maybe not freight trains, but it was damn big at Newport Beach's infamous 'Wedge' on Friday, July 24. Body surfers, surfers, stand-up paddle boarders, and bodyboarders all took a crack at the big, powerful waves. ** UPDATE: A body surfer was killed at The Wedge a few hours after this footage was shot. My deepest condolences to his family.

Giant surf at the Wedge (Newport Beach, CA), shot during an epic south swell on July 24 & 25, 2009. Waves sized in excess of 25 feet, created dangerous conditions at this world renowned bodysurfing break. A small number of bodysurfers, bodyboarders and surfers rode the Wedge during the swell. Tragically, one bodysurfer died in the massive surf, despite heroic efforts by Wedge Crew, Point Panics (HI) bodysurfers and Newport Beach lifeguards, to save him. Video: Seabear. Violent Minnesota wedge tornado intercept!!!
TornadoVideos.net Dominator intercepts violent wedge tornado southwest of Wadena, Minnesota, measuring incredible vertical winds with the radar, and launching parachute probes into the tornado with the cannon. We deployed in the strongest eastern side of the wedge, and the 150+ mph winds ripped off the room anemometer, sand-blasted the paint, and caused us to slide across the road with the hydraulics deployed. At least 4 parachute probes have been recovered so far, two of which were stuck in the top of large trees. Check out the full intercept on Discovery Channel's Storm Chasers this fall!!

Huge EF-5 wedge tornado near El Reno, Oklahoma!
During the May 24, 2011 high risk outbreak, storm chasers John Esterheld, Nicole and Don Giuliano and Heidi Farrar tracked a tornadic supercell from eastern Caddo County into Canadian county in central Oklahoma. The storm initially produced a destructive tornado near Lookeba, then put down a long-tracked violent wedge that eventually grew to roughly one mile wide before crossing Interstate 40 near Calumet as it continued toward the communities of El Reno, Piedmont and points northeast.

*** NOT FOR BROADCAST *** STORM CHASER HIT BY A WEDGE Weather Paparazzi, Doug Kiesling was hit by the outer reaches of a WEDGE TORNADO just north of Quinter Kansas on 05/23/2008. Footage from dash camera while chasing one tornado, a massive mile wide wedge tornado forms and passes less then 100 yards right in front of the suv. Video shows the power poles being ripped apart and power lines falling on the SUV.

It had been too long. My 'Big Day at The Wedge" video had just hit 1000000 views and I hadn't been to down the spot since September. I had just missed a big swell that came over the weekend but was determined to see what was going on this particular day. Lucky for me, kick-ass skimboarders Blair Conklin, Omar Meddeb and few other guys were taking in the remainder of the pulse. I interviewed Conklin on-camera but the audio sucks, so here's what he said: Conklin, 16, of Laguna Beach, is relatively new to The Wedge but is an old hand as far as skimming goes. He's at it for 10 of his 16 years and is now competing professionally on both US coasts. He and some buddies came in to grab what was left of the swell on a really nice, Wednesday afternoon in Newport Beach.

This was shot on September 2nd 2011 and is a short look at "The Wedge" in Newport Beach when the swell is up. Shot on a Canon XF-300. The day was rather hazy so the shots are a little flat and not corrected...but you get the point. Have fun watching.

The Wedge Raw 2009
The Wedge raw unedited video tape of a huge rogue set of 12 plus waves that rolled in about 8:00am on Saturday July 25, 2009. Huge south groundswell out of Cook Islands hit the Newport Beach Wedge this weekend creating perfect conditions and 18 foot to maybe 20 foot waves for skilled surfers only. This video was shot around 8:00am on Saturday, July 25, 2009 several hours after a minus low tide. Looked bigger than newport wedge during 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, or even 2001 have to go back to 1990s for bigger sets. We were on the second lifeguard tower with a prime view.

TVN Dominator captures video of the South Dakota wedge tornado that tore through north-central parts of the state on May 22, 2010. The tornado grew to nearly a half-mile wide at peak intensity!
