Web 2.0 ... The Machine is Us/ing Us
Final version now available! youtube.com mediatedcultures.net Web 2.0 in just under 5 minutes. This is the 2nd draft, and I plan on doing one more final draft. Please leave comments on what could be changed or improved, or what needs to be excluded or included. Subscribe if you want to be notified when the revision is released. UPDATE I just added this video to Mojiti where you can actually write your comments into the video itself. It is an exciting experiment in "Video 2.0". Go check it out at mojiti.com and add your voice! Transcripts are now available as well: mediatedcultures.net A couple of people have noted that the statement, "XML was created to do just that" (separate form from content) is misleading because CSS enables the same effect with HTML. I tried to integrate CSS into the video, but it ruined the flow. Perhaps in the next draft. My statement on XML is based on the following from xml.com: "In order to appreciate XML, it is important to understand why it was created. XML was created so that richly structured documents could be used over the web. The only viable alternatives, HTML and SGML, are not practical for this purpose. HTML, as we've already discussed, comes bound with a set of semantics and does not provide arbitrary structure." Thank you all for the comments. With your help the next draft will be cleaned up and hopefully free of factual errors. A higher quality version is available for download here: www.mediafire.com Please note that this is the ...

Drupal for Web2.0 Briefing
This video is from the Drupal for Web2.0 briefing, held in November 2007 by London Westside as part of their NMX 'Open for Business' programme. You can find out more on the NMX website: nm-x.com Drupal is a fast, flexible toolkit for building web2.0 sites without having to rebuild any wheels. Part content management, part programmable multi-tool, it is emerging as the do-it-all open source content management system of choice for bloggers, charities, companies, NGOs and large corporations alike. This briefing introduces Drupal, and demonstrates some of its key features, as well as looking at the competition and the development process. This is a must-see briefing for project managers, would-be programmers and people who have an interest (but not necessarily any expertise... yet) in evaluating and using this upcoming technology.

Web2.0 Expo (Part 1): Using HTML5 Web Sockets to Create Real-time Applications
Harnessing the Power of HTML5 Web Sockets to Create Scalable Real-time Applications Web2.0 Expo SF 2010 Peter Lubbers, Brian Albers Kaazing 3:10pm Thursday, 05/06/2010 For More Info, Including PDF Slides, visit: www.web2expo.com Today, we enjoy what looks like a real-time web experience, but take a look under the hood and you'll quickly see that this "real-time" experience has an outrageously high price tag—one you pay with network throughput and latency. The user-perceived real-time experience is often achieved by using an assortment of clever browser hacks and obscure techniques known as Comet or Reverse Ajax. The bottom line is that simulating bi-directional browser communication over HTTP—which is half-duplex and request/response driven by nature—is error-prone and complex. Complexity does not scale. HTML5 Web Sockets to the rescue! Defined in the Communications section of the HTML5 specification, HTML5 Web Sockets represent the next evolution of web communications—a full-duplex, bidirectional communications channel that operates over a single socket. WebSockets provide not only a standard against which scalable real-time RIA applications can be built, but also a socket, native to the browser, that facilitates network programming from the browser with super-efficient bi-directional (full-duplex) communication over a single connection, eliminating many the problems that Comet and AJAX solutions are prone to and getting rid of the complexity. In this session, Brian and ...
