I nearly freaked out when I found out that Robert Brookins passed away age 46, just a month before (April 15th 2009) Wayman passed aged 44, this May 15th 2009. RIP to these beautiful souls who lit up our lives with beautiful music. Man, there is going to be one Jam Jam session up in heaven!

And I can't recall anyone fighting cancer the way he fought it — he was a hero on the court, on the stage, in his fight to live and in everything he did. I send my sincerest, heartfelt prayers of comfort to his wife Regina, the four wonderful Tisdale kids, his family, friends and the millions of fans who adored him."

Wayman Tisdale was one of the finest artists I have ever had the privilege to photograph. His emotion and attitude transferred to the audience during every performance he gave. He will be missed. Seen him live once at the Art and Soul Festival in Oakland a few years ago and loved him since. Couldn't record the whole show, security walking around checking people, haha.

Manning, Elliot Perry, Majerie, etc. Wayman Lawrence Tisdale (born June 9, 1964, in Tulsa, Oklahoma) is an American former professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association and now a jazz bass guitarist and a member of the Oklahoma Tourism Board. Tisdale graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he grew up. As a college player at the University of Oklahoma from 1983 to 1985, he was a three-time All-American, and is still the only male in Division I basketball history to be voted All-America his freshman (also the first freshman to become an All-American), sophomore and junior seasons. He won a gold medal as a member of the 1984 US Olympic basketball team coached by Indiana University's Bobby Knight, and the Indiana Pacers made Tisdale the second overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft. As a center and power forward, Tisdale averaged over 15 points and six rebounds per game in a 12-season professional career with the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns. His best season was in 1989-90 with the Kings, when he averaged 22.3 points and 7.5 rebounds a game. In 1997, Tisdale retired to focus on his musical career.

Featuring 11 original songs, Tisdale's own funky vocals and a crew of down-and-dirty musicians, The Fonk Record also boasts three guest stars with extensive funk résumés—George Clinton, George Duke and Ali Woodson. To those who knew him best, it seemed only natural that Tisdale would craft a funk project. "He always wanted to make funk music," says Derek (DOA) Allen, who produced The Fonk Record and was one of Tisdale's closest friends. "People are going to see a whole 'nother side of Wayman on this record—he was on a mission to play as hard and funky as he could." It was back in the late 80s that Allen met Tisdale one night at Arco Arena in Sacramento. Allen was playing bass for Janet Jackson, and Tisdale—at that time a star power forward for the NBA's Sacramento Kings—was watching from the sidelines. "He said he was a bass player too and that we should hook up," says Allen, who would go on to appear on several of Tisdale's recordings, including 2008's Rebound, the final jazz release of Tisdale's career. Allen says all funk fans will enjoy The Fonk Record. "We tried to make it sound authentic—real raw and greasy funk, like back in the 70s."
