Pendulum Waves
Fifteen uncoupled simple pendulums of monotonically increasing lengths dance together to produce visual traveling waves, standing waves, beating, and (seemingly) random motion. For more details see sciencedemonstrations.fas.harvard.edu The period of one complete cycle of the dance is 60 seconds. The length of the longest pendulum has been adjusted so that it executes 51 oscillations in this 60 second period. The length of each successive shorter pendulum is carefully adjusted so that it executes one additional oscillation in this period. Thus, the 15th pendulum (shortest) undergoes 65 oscillations. Our apparatus was built from a design published by Richard Berg [Am J Phys 59(2), 186-187 (1991)] at the University of Maryland. A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes on record slammed Japan's eastern coast on Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away ships, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control. Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture, or state, closest to the epicentre. Another 137 were confirmed killed, with 531 people missing. Police also said 544 people were injured. If we pick up our own trash, the garbage piles don't vanish. They just build up more slowly from the many OTHER people who always leave a trail of crap behind them as they go. So, if we don't like it, we have to pick up other people's trash as well as our own. But sometimes, rarely, a little cleanup goes a long way, and one single person can make a huge difference. During evening rush hour on Seattle I-5, this clogged left lane usually has a 1/2-mile backup. This exit-only lane leads down into the high speed "Express Lanes" under the city. If you manage to exit here, there's rarely congestion in the Express Lanes. You might gain 10min! But the exit itself is jammed. And whenever it's jammed, you might lose more time in the jam than you'll gain from getting on to the express lanes. Also, if you miss getting into the left lane early, then you're screwed, since nobody in the row of ~200 cars will let you in. There is no "zipper merge." The Wave Trailer
Trailer for film The Wave by Dennis Gansel. THE WAVE is based on a real event from a Californian high school in 1967 and transposed to Germany today. A cautionary tale about the roots of fascism. The film opens in a rush of energy with charismatic teacher Rainer Wegner beginning a week long class on autocracy. To indifferent students, its a hard sell, but Wegner gets an idea for an experiment: as their leader he asks the students to call him Mr Wegner, chooses the motto strength through discipline, creates a logo, decides that everyone wears a white shirt, and names the group, The Wave adding a secret sign reminiscent of a Nazi salute. Much to their surprise the students find that they like the power of unity and soon this new found discipline spills over to other school activities and newcomers join the group. The Wave gives the kids something to believe in for a change, until they go too far and The Wave spins out of control.

There's a major search and rescue operation underway in Japan. 300 hundred military planes and 40 ships have joined the mission to survey the damage. It's the north east of Japan which has been worst hit by the massive tsunami caused by the biggest in nearly a century and a half. At the centre the city of Sendai, where the worst is feared for hundreds perhaps thousands of people. The official figure of dead is currently 95 and rising. Scary! Massive waves on huge road bridge send Volgograd drivers asphalt surfing
Motorists using a bridge in the southern Russian city of Volgograd were given the ride of a lifetime by a powerful gust of wind. The new river crossing started shaking violently and a massive downpour at the same time made conditions worse. Drivers say their cars were literally thrown into the air, many thinking it was an unexpected earthquake. The shaking was so severe it caused vehicles to career into the opposite lane creating chaos. Local authorities claim the shaking of the bridge was possibly caused by an earthquake. Seismologists, however, say this is highly unlikely. Meanwhile, Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an investigation into the bridge's safety and construction history. The bridge across Volga river is 1260 meters long and 32 meters wide. It was opened less than a year ago in October 2009.

For thick and/or long hair, I'd recommend dividing your hair into 4+ more sections (as many as you'd need). That way, you won't have to cramp lots of hair into one pen/pencil. Will this work for medium/short-lengthed hair? Layered hair? -YES. It worked for my shoulder-lengthed layers, as you've seen in the video. If your hair is really layered, I'd suggest you to group your layers together according to their length. Will this work for my hair (frizzy, curly, wavy, etc.)? -I don't know your hair texture & type personally so I wouldn't know for sure. The best way to know is for YOU to GIVE IT A TRY! Can I sleep with the pens in? NO, I really wouldn't recommend it. One, you could be putting yourself in danger if you roll around so the pens might stab you hard in your scalp. Secondly, your curls might be TOO curly and frizzy when you take the pens out in the morning. Then, you'd have to spend lots of time trying to loosen your curls/waves up. How long does the curls/waves last? -ALL day for me without any hair products. They also lasted until the next day as well (even when I've slept in them) but they just got looser. If you need them to stay longer in your hair, use some hairspray! I want to wear this to school but don't have much time in the morning? -You can do this the night before and sleep ...

French lighthouses and VERY BIG waves during stormy weather (+ description)
This video was taken on the 7th of december 2007 in "Raz de Sein" at the western tip of France, in Brittany, on a (very) stormy day. Those lighthouses isolated in the open sea are/were called "Hells" because of the roughness of living conditions inside these isolated buildings, frequently harassed by the elements. The first one seen in the video is Ar Men ("The Rock" in Breton), one of the best known lighthouses because of its isolated situation and the considerable difficulties its construction has presented (14 years were needed to build it !!), and the danger in evacuating its personnel. Considered as one of the most challenging workplaces by the community of lighthouse keepers, it has been named "The Hell of Hells". It has been automated in 1990. Later we can see Tévennec, a little known lighthouse situated on the east side of the Sein Island. It had such bad luck in store for its guardians that it was suspected to be baleful, or even haunted. Indeed, during stormy weather, some keepers reported that gloomy screams could be heard. Recently a cave was found in the rock on which Tévennec was built, that may explain the weird noises heard by the keepers. Since nobody wanted to live on this rock anymore, this lighthouse was automated way before the others, in 1910. Nowadays, general automation makes human presence useless aboard these ocean look-out posts.
