Dr. Presson demonstrates this futuristic device from the '70s. EDIT: a lot of people have written in asking what exactly my vocoder setup is. Well that's your classic Roland SVC-350, and I'm using a Kurzweil K2600 with the basic jar-of-wasps analog brass sound as the driver. The vocal mic has no pre-processing whatsoever, I just plugged it directly into the vocoder.

Razor Robot Vocoder Funk Pt.1
This is a recording I made for the purpose of showing Roger my vocoder.It is the same vocoder as on Stay Vocoder.The only difference is this sound came from a DX7. I recorded this 2 years before his death. I gave a cassette of it to the Harding family who are cousins to the Troutmans. I was informed that Terry Troutman burned a CD of it to take with them as they travel.The Hardings passed on his thanks to me..:) Razor Robot is what I will call the voice of this vocoder from now on..because it is so chillen cold at times I just play it back instead of working on it more.:( Pt.2 has the trademark Slam pitch bends and high notes in it..I hope you like both of these films..:)

20 One Band Modular Vocoder
Vocoders are complex machines but working with a simple principle. They take two inputs, put them through filterbanks and apply the envelopes of one input and applies it on the amplitude of the other. Thus the frequency spectrum of one signal is imparted on the other but only if that signal contains those frequencies. Usually vocoders sport filterbanks with at least 10 filters in each, expensive if you want to do it with a modular. This demo shows that you can make quite an efficient vocoding style effect using just one filter each for carrier and modulator!

When you raise the MIXER "OSC 1 LEVEL" (knob 1) and play the keyboard, the OSC 1 waveform will be input to the the band pass filter of the carrier 4. KORG VC-10 Analog Vocoder 1978 | HQ DEMO
The Korg VC-10 vocoder came out 1978 together with the MS-synths. The VC-10 also contains a full polyphonic keyboard and a dynamic microphone. It has a switchable "ensemble" effect. Vibrato. It also have a (noisy) noise generator for reproducing consonants. The VC-10 has the same casing as the Korg MS-10, the VC-10 is just heavier (and this is not because its microphone). The VC-10 sounds quite good. It sounds typically analog. Digital vocoders sound different. Of course the VC-10 is not a Sennheiser or an EMS, but the Korg was also much cheaper. The pitch can also be controlled by an external voltage. For some reason, the carrier signal is to be heard even without talking in the microphone - almost everytime I press the keys (as you can see in the video). If someone exactly knows the responsible trimpot inside, please let me know. At the end of the video I played the VC-10 with a delay from Roland DEP-5. The VC-10 was used by Jean-Michel Jarre.
