Dan Roam - Back of the Napkin
Pop visualization quiz: You're on the way home from this conference. At the airport bar, you strike up a conversation with the person on the next stool. He or she asks, "What do you do?" You say, "I manage Enterprise Architecture Projects for mission-critical business applications with an emphasis on Services Oriented Architectures." He or she smiles politely and says, "You broke your what?" Let's face it: whether we're talking to a stranger in a bar, our CEO, or the lowest Project Manager in the food chain, describing Enterprise Architecture is hard... unless we use pictures. Dan Roam demonstrates step-by-step how anyone -- regardless of artistic talent or training -- can use simple pictures to describe complex concepts, solve fuzzy problems, and sell others on our breakthrough ideas.

Visual Thinking with Graph Network
Google Tech Talks March, 13 2008 ABSTRACT Many visual perception tasks are fundamentally NP-hard computational problems. Solving these problems robustly requires thinking through combinatorially many hypothesis. Despite this, our human visual system performs these tasks effortlessly. How is this done? I would like to make two points on this topic. First, formulating visual thinking as NP-hard computation tasks has an important advantage: visual routines can be analyzed precisely to identify their behaviors independently of their implementations. Second, I will show there is a class of graph optimization problems which can be implemented using a distributed network system with physical (and plausible biological) interpretation. I will demonstrate this graph based approach for: 1) image segmentation using Normalized Cuts with explanations for illusory contours, visual pop out and attention; 2) salient contour grouping Speaker: Jianbo Shi Jianbo Shi was born in Shanghai, China. Since then he has been moving. He studied Computer Science and Mathematics as an undergraduate at Cornell University where he received his BA in 1994. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from University of California at Berkeley in 1998, for his thesis on Normalize Cuts image segmentation algorithm. He joined The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in 1999 as a research faculty, where he lead the Human Identification at Distance(HumanID) project, developing vision techniques ...

Animate: Avoid the Power Point Trap!!
At www.thinkvisuallystudios.com, we like to use drawings to help people share their ideas, solve problems and tell stories creatively. We understand that, if you've got some content to share, it can be difficult to engage your audience and get your message across. Too often it's easy to fall into the 'Power Point Trap', where you'll find that you're so busy dealing with the complex detail of your project, that when the time finally comes to communicate it, you forgot to filter all that extra detail out and tell the real story at it's heart. Making a short video to communicate your idea to your audience can help solve this problem. It's not a replacement for the rich detail of your project, but instead, it's an engaging introduction to your idea, which summarizes the key messages and tells a compelling visual story that will capture the imagination of your audience. Visit our website to find out more or to get in touch with us. http

Elements of Visual thinking project
A project i worked on with my group for the class here at mica called Elements of Visual Thinking. Here is the meaning of it: People die every day. In Baltimore, murder has added to this death toll like few other cities in America. Our group plans to create a large chalk drawing as a social commentary on the rate of murder in Baltimore and as it affects the world. By taking this drawing through a series of different media locations, it will parallel the way in which our message will grow as it becomes more and more accessible to the world. We will start our project by setting up a video camera to document the process. We will then begin to fill in a portion of the parking lot behind the Fox building with chalk outlines of people. We will continue to fill our selected space until it is a white surface. Two of us will be drawing, two will be lying on the ground as models and one will be monitoring electronics. We chose this space since it is secluded and few people besides ourselves will view the making of this image. Our next step is to project the video of the making of this image upon the side of the **** building, downtown. This video will show the whole creation sped up to fit in five to fifteen minutes. We will then videotape the projection and the responses of those who stop and view it. This new footage will be posted on the web. This will show the progression of our message from only among ourselves, then out to Baltimore and then out to the world. The image itself ...
The Back Of The Napkin by Dan Roam |Book Brief
In his book, The Back Of The Napkin, author Dan Roam asserts that that everyone is born with a talent for visual thinking, but that we — especially in the business world — are never encouraged to develop it. In this video, Roam shows us how anyone with a pen and a scrap of paper can exercise their imagination and work through any business problem by creating pictures.

IHG: Green Engage
Here's a new video we made for InterContinental Hotels Group, also known as IHG. This 3-minute overview animation is being used to drive adoption and usage of IHG's Green Engage program, which helps individual hotels analyze their energy usage and devise action plans to reduce their environmental impact. It was important to be inspire people to action rather than trying to scare people into participating. And because IHG is so international, we also wanted a large amount of the message to come across visually.

The approach is a mashup of game principles, game mechanics and work. It's a set of methods for inventors, explorers, and change agents. A practice made of people, paper and passion. It's for people who want to design the future, to change the world, to make, create and innovate. Authors@Google: Dan Roam
Dan Roam visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "The Back of the Napkin: Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures." This event took place on May 27, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series. Drawing on twenty years of visual problem solving combined with the recent discoveries of vision science, this book shows anyone how to clarify a problem or sell an idea by visually breaking it down using a simple set of visual thinking tools -- tools that take advantage of everyone's innate ability to look, see, imagine, and show. The Back of the Napkin proves that thinking with pictures can help anyone discover and develop new ideas, solve problems in unexpected ways, and dramatically improve their ability to share their insights. This book will help readers literally see the world in a new way. Dan Roam is the founder and president of Digital Roam Inc., a management- consulting firm that helps business executives solve complex problems through visual thinking. He has brought his unique approach to clients such as General Electric, Wal-Mart, Wells Fargo Bank, the US Navy, HBO, News Corporation, and Sun Microsystems, among many others. Temple Grandin - Thinking in Pictures
A very interesting conclusion to an amazing movie! Let us hope for all children with special needs -- that they would all find someone who believes in them. Nature is cruel but we don't have to be. We all need someone to believe in us. We all need to know that someone cares.
Iowa, Did You Know?
Once again Dachis Group has teamed up with Dr. Scott McLeod of Iowa State University to create a thought-provoking video. The brand-new "Iowa, Did You Know?" kicked off the School Administrators of Iowa Conference on Wednesday, August 3, 2011. This DYK video contrasts the world's exponential growth in technology and learning with Iowa's struggles to best prepare K-12 students for this new future. Intended as a forceful wake-up call for Iowa educators, the video stresses the importance of an educational approach that moves away from "low-level mental work" and towards stronger development in critical thinking and problem solving. A facilitator's guide is available in the links below. Use it to help generate discussion at local service clubs, gatherings of parents at schools, town halls with local politicians, open conversations with school board members, meetings at senior citizen or community centers, book clubs, informal neighborhood discussion groups, etc... Dachis Group (as XPLANE) previously worked with Dr. McLeod and Karl Fisch on the educational "Did You Know? 2.0" video in 2007. We collaborated again in 2009, this time including The Economist, on "Did You Know? 4.0" which focused on media convergence and technology. These videos have more than 7 million views on YouTube.
