Virtual Reality changes Real-Life Behavior

Cutting down a virtual redwood with a virtual chainsaw may lead you to save trees by recycling more paper. That finding is an example of how real-world behavior can be changed by immersing people in virtual reality environments -- a notion that is at the heart of work under way in Stanford's Virtual Human Interaction Lab. Aurasma Virtual Browser and virtual world hands-on

Watching Aurasma in action is very impressive, it is tech that looks like magic. Aurasma is software that picks out objects, shapes, symbols -- which are called triggers -- with its Virtual Browser and understands what they are. Once the trigger is recognized, relevant content gets pushed across to the user using enhanced reality. For example, we have a look at a $20 bill during our demo and the bill in the phone display starts to deconstruct ending in some pretty serious rah rah sis boom bah. Aurasma is getting traction in advertising and we can only see this growing, it is really addictive fun. Users can grab the app free on either iOS or Android -- another mobile platform is coming with a name that doesn't rhyme with BlackBerry -- and get playing and creating. Aurasma also has a pro version -- also free -- with much more serious development tours for folks that really want to stretch its boundaries. Aurasma has been around for a while now but this is the first chance we've had a demo and we were very impressed.

Virtual Distance Learning Classroom using Kinect - University of Florida Digital Worlds Institute

This video shows the new Kinect-based distance learning platform that the University of Florida Digital Worlds Institute is developing for the distance courses. This system was first presented in November 2011 at the Super Computing conference organized in Seattle, and since then has attracted a lot of attention from many other Universities and Academic Institutes around the World. What is unique about this system is that eliminates the distance between the remote participants of a distance course using a distributed network of virtual reallity classrooms. Each of the distance students or instructors can join one of our virtual reality classrooms using a laptop or TV connected with Microsoft's Kinect sensor. The students can attend their live or pre-recorder 3D virtual classes from their couch and they can control their virtual images, their avatars, using intuitive gestures and body motions, known also as Natural User Interface. Let me show you how our virtual reality classrooms works! The Kinect camera can capture your video as well as your 3D shape using an infrared depth sensor. By combining your 3D shape with the video, your real 3D image is composed and visualized as an avatar in one of our virtual classrooms. The shape and position of the 3D avatar of the students and instructors is transmitted on-line to the rest of the virtual participants using our distrubuted networking system. As a result, a fully populated realistic virtual class is synthesized and shown in ...

euronews hi-tech - Virtual cinema

www.euronews.com Immersive entertainment, the next step in visual wizardry, is gaining momentum in cinema and gaming circles. There are 900 immersion domes currently being used around the world in places including theme parks and planetariums where the interactive 3D and holographic displays give the viewer the impression of being teleported into the heart of the action. However for Ed Lantz, President and CTO of Vortex Immersion Media Inc, we are already living in an immersive world: "These are virtual worlds. The dome is one entry portal into those immersive worlds, your cell is another and your PDA. So, increasingly we are being surrounded by screens. What we're doing in the domes is we are exploding the frame. The image completely surrounds you so it's as if you are actually fully immersed in a computer generated environment. It's like taking 500 people and teleporting them into cyber space." The re-release of Titanic is another example of the huge demand for 3D cinema. Fifteen years on, the reworked film's popularity shows that the appetite for ever more interactive cinema, could set the president for Hollywood's future endeavours. Peter Caranicas, deputy editor of Variety talks about the impact technology is having the entertainment industry: "The advent of social networking and the internet and video streaming is really changing people's viewing habits and I think the Hollywood studios are really at a loss as to how to deal with this as well as the major television ...

MIT Students Create The Future With An iPad And A Glove

You've seen Stephen Spielberg's film, Minority Report, right? Tom Cruise's character stands in front of virtual screens, puts on a pair of gloves, and manipulates the data and the memories without touching a thing. Well, the super brains at MIT's media lab have taken the first step toward that reality, using Apple's magical device as a display screen and a special glove/attachment combo to interact with it. The video the group has released shows some pretty fancy stuff, drawing objects in 3D real time, and then manipulating them in collaboration with others. There's even some slick Minority Report-style interface there, with researches moving red and blue rectangles around in the virtual space they've created on the iPad. According to the project website, T(ether) is a spatially aware display that allows people to interact intuitively with volumetric data. It looks like the iPad camera and that little square attached to the iPad take care of tracking the user's head position and orientation to manage the virtual 3D space. We've seen this type of faux-3D before in augmented reality apps, but never put to such serious use as this. Not only can you reach into the virtual world and manipulate the objects you create there, but there's a way to connect with others, locally or remotely, to collaborate within a shared 3D virtual space. Looks like all that virtual reality stuff from the late 1990s is coming around again, only with the iPad, an off-the-shelf computing system with ...
