To whom we hope are concerned, We are writing to you as fellow songwriters, artists, free expressionists of this great nation in hopes that you will be changed by what you read below and are compelled to help free an innocent expressionist. Very currently, on December 31st, 2011, a year of music and patriotic passion has ended for a fellow songwriter in Vietnam. 2012 is not looking hopeful for him or any of us who believe in human rights as well as freedom of expression for the country. In light of China and Vietnam's current dispute over the Spratly islands Hoang Sa and Truong Sa, Vietnamese singer/songwriter VIET KHANG had written and shared songs of grief over his country's loss. They've spread rapidly online. His songs titled "Anh La Ai (roughly translates to: 'Who are you?')" and "Viet Nam Toi Dau ('Where is my Vietnam?')" spoke on behalf of the Vietnamese citizens hurting from these current events. He has recently been arrested and imprisoned by the Vietnamese government for said actions. With lyrics that ask, why does my country deserve more bloodshed?, from a patriotic soul, many are outraged that a song written to express love and concern for its country would yield such violent reactions from its own leaders. In a world where rapists, murderers, and terrorists roam among us, it begs the question, why are these authorities using precious security resources to arrest a patriotic singer/songwriter? The term Montagnard means "mountain people" in French and is a carryover from the French colonial period in Vietnam. In Vietnamese, they are known by the term thượng (highlanders) - this term can also be applied to other minority ethnic groups in Vietnam. Thượng is the Vietnamese adaptation of the Chinese "Shang" (上). Montagnard was the term, typically shortened to "Yard", used by US military personnel in the Central Highlands during the Vietnam War. However the term has been viewed as derogatory and the official term is now Người dân tộc thiếu số (literally means minority people). Before the Vietnam War, the population of the Central Highlands, estimated at between 3 and 3.5 million, was almost exclusively Degar. Today, the population is approximately 4 million, of whom about 1 million are Degars. The 30 or so Degar tribes in the Central Highlands comprise more than six different ethnic groups who speak languages drawn primarily from the Malayo-Polynesian, Tai, and Mon-Khmer language families. The main tribes, in order of population, are the Jarai, Rhade, Bahnar, Koho, Mnong, and Stieng. He was arrested by the Vietnamese communist authorities December 23, 2011 just for having composed and sang two patriotic songs ("Who are You" and "" Where is my Vietnam ") emphasizing the concern of the Vietnamese people against the invasion China's gradual. During 2011, Hundreds of people took to the streets in Vietnam to protest against Chinese incursions in Vietnamese seas territorales. Ironically, several protestors were imprisoned or brutally oppressed by the Vietnamese police - without judiciare trial. Một đoạn video clip dài 3 phút 44 giây ghi lại cảnh một con tàu của Việt Nam đuổi tàu hải giám của Trung Quốc được tung lên trang youtube hôm 6 tháng 11, mà người ta không rõ nó được quay vào khi nào và ở địa điểm nào trên biển Đông. Nội dung của đoạn phim không cho biết chiếc tàu của Việt Nam thuộc lực lượng nào, hải quân hay cảnh sát biển, và trên tàu không thấy trang bị vũ khí. Nhưng tàu Trung Quốc thì thấy rất rõ hàng chữ 'China Marine Surveillance', tức tàu hải giám Trung Quốc. Trong đoạn phim, có thể nghe rất rõ tiếng người Việt Nam trên con tàu mà người quay phim đứng, có vẻ đoạn phim được quay bằng điện thoại di động. Có thể nghe được tiếng người trên tàu Việt Nam ra lệnh 'bám chắc vào", 'mặc quần áo vào'... khi hai tàu đuổi nhau và mạn trái tàu Việt Nam áp sát vào mạn bên phải của tàu hải giám Trung Quốc rồi đụng nhau một cú thật mạnh vào lúc 1 phút 47 giây trong đoạn phim. Sau khi đụng nhau, hai chiếc tàu cùng rồ máy, kè nhau trong khoảng 2 phút nữa. Có thể thấy mạn bên phải của tàu Trung Quốc trầy từng vết lớn.
