Feb 8, 2011 - georgeous lighting . wonderful the way it is done with the shadows on the faces of them kissing like a sillohette. ( spelling , sorry). and the way the little fibers of the fur of her hat are captured, the way the light crawls from above, in a downward fashion as she walks toward the camera, like the way her personal light has gone downward, and sank. sunk. well, you get the idea. great acting, as always. ann blythe, nice, reaction is perfect. what great art these movies were. how wonderful.

Feb 8, 2011 - continuity, i think we are supposed to fill in for ourselves that the two of them went back downstairs while mildred was trying to start the car. because vida did not pick up the gun , did she, before they went upstairs, and he was shot downstairs, right?

The cinematographer on this film was Ernest Haller, who received an Oscar nomination. (He won a co-Oscar for his Technicolor work on Gone With The Wind in 1939.)

Dec 17, 2011 - Absolutely perfect utilization of black and white cinematography. Case in point- how Monte and Veda's faces emerge from shadows at the beginning. Sidenote: Joan wasn't a barrel of laughs about winning the Oscar for this. She told her daughter, if you believe her, that it was all downhill from there.
