Title: STS-129 HD Launch
Added: Nov 16, 2009
Author: NASAtelevision
Duration: 11:32
Description:
Space shuttle Atlantis and its six-member crew began an 11-day delivery flight to the International Space Station on Monday with a 2:28 p.m. EST launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The shuttle will transport spare hardware to the outpost and return a station crew member who spent more than two months in space. Atlantis is carrying about 30,000 pounds of replacement parts for systems that provide power to the station, keep it from overheating, and maintain a proper orientation in space. The large equipment can best be transported using the shuttle's unique capabilities.

Jan 1, 2011 - It's normal. It's due to reduced atmospheric pressures at that altitude.

Jan 1, 2011 - It helps to determine if there was foam shed from the external tank (which did in Space Shuttle Columbia), if any was shed the location of the foam shedding, etc.

Jan 1, 2011 - Where they're recovered by two NASA recovery ships, the Freedom Star and Liberty Star. I have some video of them returning the STS-129 SRBs thru Canaveral Lock in my YouTube feed.

Jan 1, 2011 - The solid rocket boosters that fall back to Earth land in the Atlantic in a predetermined, cordoned off area where they're retrieved. The External Tank burns up in the Earth's atmosphere and does not return to Earth (it's not reusable like the SRBs).

Jan 1, 2011 - Nope. Atlantis. I was there. :)

Jan 1, 2011 - 2011, now.
ageekmom Says:
Jan 1, 2011 - Not on the Space Shuttle, but there's a whole new era of spaceflight opening up. Don't give up before you've even begun.

Jan 1, 2011 - @danschaoticmind Actually, if you are fortunate enough to attend a NASA Tweetup (check Twitter for @nasatweetup) you will be able to view the launch from as close as humanly possible. The only people closer to launch will be the astronauts themselves and the rescue crews in the blast-proof bunkers near the launchpad! It's AWESOME!

Jan 1, 2011 - There are Tyvec (sort of a plasticized paper) covers that cover the thrusters on the nose of the Shuttle orbiter and those are meant to fly off at or before liftoff, and they do.
ageekmom Says:
Jan 1, 2011 - The External Tank burns up in the atmosphere. It is not recovered and recycled like the solid rocket boosters (SRBs) are.
ageekmom Says:
Jan 1, 2011 - The solid rocket boosters return to the Atlantic Ocean, not the Indian Ocean.
Neutrinoghost Says:
Jan 1, 2011 - Ok, thanks.

Jan 1, 2011 - I don't do tweetups. However, I have in the past gotten to see it from building 1649 (or 59... See my Atlas V launch...) And the causeway. Both spots are nice. But since I do not do the whole twitter thing (Nor am I press) That will likely not happen. Being close to the launch is not the important part. What is important, is being able to be there and experience it. Titusville, Canaveral AFB, and the causeway are areas I got to see it from. The experience was the same though.
danschaoticmind Says:
Jan 1, 2011 - And I think that is the crucial difference. Seeing it from the tweetup site (Which if I have understood this right, is at the press site) is an exception to the rule and Most people do not do twitter. Thus, my directions are tailored around that. Anyways, If I am not otherwise working (I work abroad and travel a lot) I'll likely be doing my usual coverage. Coverage for me begins about 24 hours before (When preliminary launch activities occur) and typically run off and on till landing.

Jan 2, 2011 - I love the roll program
aimhigh59 Says:
Jan 2, 2011 - There is no one in blast proof bunkers. Rescue crew and close out crews fall back right near the press site. The bunkers are something the crew has to reach on its own. Thats why they practice for it.

Jan 2, 2011 - @aimhigh59 Thank you for the correction.

Jan 8, 2011 - It's not an actual object. It's a "glitch" in the video. This type of glitch is called a "video artifact" or something like that.

Jan 13, 2011 - the flash watching the take off lol

ageekmom Says:
Jan 1, 2011 - It's an homage to the history of human achievement. The RV Atlantis was an oceanographic research vessel, a sailing ship, from 1930 to 1966.
