May 26, 2012 - No she prostitutes her daughter so her baby won't starve. Do you even listen to lyrics. The best line is about the self righteous hypocrites, best song ever.
sylviasuits Says:
May 26, 2012 - Her mother did the only thing she could think of to get her out of the hell hole they were living in, Fancy never saw her mother again. Welfare took the Baby, her mother died, and Fancy did what she had to do to make sure her Mother's actions were not in vain. She got out and stayed out of the slum.
dugite100 Says:
May 28, 2012 - I was taking the one less mouth to feed aproach. It was common to send older children out into the world when starvation threatened, I'm thinking if you can't be a maid or shopworker there aren't too many options for a poor / low born girl with in those circumstances. Boys usually were sent out to laboring jobs. I was refuting a post that said her mom did it for money.
sylviasuits Says:
May 28, 2012 - Agree!!

May 28, 2012 - It's like Victoria and her mother Tawny in Judy Blume's book, Summer Sisters.

May 28, 2012 - Classic.
Keadil Says:
May 28, 2012 - 0.o She does prostitute her daughter, but it has nothing to do with the baby. She casts her out as a prostitute so that Fancy doesn't end up dead like she and the baby are about to be. If Fancy had stayed with them then all three would be dead. There are two graves at the end. There is no hypocrisy here, she just knew that Fancy could get by without her and helped her the best she could rather than taking Fancy down with her.
RyanTheIncredible882 Says:
May 29, 2012 - Only Reba could make a song about prostitution and make it into country gold. Anyone else who would've done this song could've ended their career. But only Reba could sing this song's content with just the right intensity. And that is one reason why Reba is a living legend.
