Chimaelstrom Says:
Feb 10, 2012 - For those who are arguing over which is the worse version of this song, disturbed or genesis, "In Flames" did a cover of disturbed's cover, and it's like a cheese grater on the eardrums. If you don't believe me, look it up, but I warned you...and I think we can all agree its the worst at least.

Feb 11, 2012 - History lesson of sorts for the kiddies: At the time this video was released, there was a muppet-based political satire show called "D.C. Follies. It ran 1985-1987 and poked fun at the political leaders of the day. This video is somewhat serious though (despite the muppets), portraying Reagan's own paranoia and feeble-mindedness as possible contributors to WW3. Lyrics = all about a feeling of dread if the old guard is allowed to rule (and the new generation doesn't fight for the future/peace).
TheRealTacoDan Says:
Feb 11, 2012 - @cantecleer World War 3? Are you sure you're not talking about the Cold War?
cantecleer Says:
Feb 11, 2012 - @TheRealTacoDan Well, at the time, an open conflict between the US and USSR was tantamount to WW3 (because it would have drawn all the other major global and regional powers into the fray). So I mean exactly what I said. The "Cold War" was a series of proxy wars and economic/geopolitical posturing. The lyrics (with the backdrop of the video) portray a paranoid and confused Reagan unleashing nuclear Armageddon (M.A.D.), which is also a symbol of open hostility.
cantecleer Says:
Feb 11, 2012 - @TheRealTacoDan It is only now, after the dissipation of the threat of mutually assured destruction (via a "hot" war) that we can think of WW3 as something separated from WW3. If the US and the USSR stood toe to toe against each other, it would have been a world war. Western Europe (NATO) would have stood against Eastern Europe (Soviet Satellites). N.Korea would have moved against S.Korea. Africa would have erupted into chaos as pro-western nations fought pro-eastern countries.
cantecleer Says:
Feb 11, 2012 - whoops, in that second comment I meant "that we can think of 'WW3' as something separated from the 'Cold War.'" Pushing "the button" (and the big nuclear blast) was a symbol of open hostilities between the two powers (and the global nature of the conflict/chaos/destruction that would have been unleashed). Many historians now think the "Cold War" was actually WW3, and that any future global conflict will more accurately be described as WWIV. Just google "Cold War + World War 3"....
cantecleer Says:
Feb 11, 2012 - @TheRealTacoDan It's hard to explain, but during the 80's people still felt like it was WW3 to actually directly fight the Soviets (as such an open conflict would mean the end of the world). Now, informed people generally realize that the Cold War *was* WW3, it's just that it was fought in regional backwaters by militaries and governments who were armed/trained, bankrolled, and backed by the major powers. I was mostly trying to explain the puppets, sorry for any confusion.

Feb 11, 2012 - People, you have no idea what you're talking about. This song is so good that 30 years later we're still living the same shit, complainig about the same political problems but with new puppet faces. It's so good that Disturbed made a cover of it.
betocabrera79 Says:
Feb 11, 2012 - Try to transport 30 years back and watch all the truth, symbolism, irony and sarcasm from this video, you'll see further!!!There's no much difference from what wee see today on the news.
