Sep 15, 2011 - Incredible... I have been learning Bata for 2 years and only recently came upon this realization; however, because I listen to so much jazz, I never realized I that I had done this in my playing within that style.Great advice.

Sep 15, 2011 - RE: Synesthesia. I don't have but it is very similar. Color hearing is something that happens to your ears after many years of playing. I was not aware of color hearing existing until it happened to me. There were clues to this around (Elvin calling his cymbals blue or green) but it's like a religious experience in that you won't know about until you experience it. Most musicians will achieve this level as It is a normal progression from decades of ear training.

Oct 13, 2011 - This video was taken at The University of Colorado at Boulder.

JazzVideoGuy Says:

Oct 13, 2011 - Were you there?

bijouxmusic Says:

Oct 13, 2011 - Unfortunately I didn't make it that day. But there is where I teach. So this was funny because as I am watching the video I start to look around and think that the room looks familiar. Then of course I was 99% sure it was our band room, and then finally when he asks for a volunteer one of our students comes up! We have been very fortunate to have some brilliant musicians come the the University to present master classes. Thanks for posting!

JazzVideoGuy Says:

Oct 13, 2011 - What do you teach?

bijouxmusic Says:

Oct 13, 2011 - DoubleBass and Jazz combo.

JazzVideoGuy Says:

Oct 13, 2011 - Cool. When I was there, I got a nice feeling about the program.

Oct 13, 2011 - Excellent lesson Hal. I was like you. Then one day it came to me. It is always has been about your ears and playing like you mean it. Dom

Oct 22, 2011 - So playing an instrument is, to a great extent, up to your approach, personality, understanding and innate sense of creativity. So how is this revolutionary? To put it another way -- when you think..you stink. Music must be a natural form of expression. And some people just can't grasp that.

Dec 14, 2011 - Not sure whether or not mr. galper and I are on the same level. I'm a jazz musician. In my view, there are three major experiences one should acquire in order to achieve a high level of musical accomplishment in jazz performance.1) Listen to as many notable artists as you can. Especially, listen to those whose contributions to jazz were considered milestones in the development of the music. Such as: John Coltrane, Monk, Bird, Miles Davis, Armstrong, etc.

DaveVelo1 Says:

Dec 14, 2011 - Continued...2) The only training I would recommend is to know your instrument inside and out. Knowing something about music theory helps but not entirely necessary. You should be able to hear someone sing a note and/or phrase and be able to reproduce it on your instrument without hesitation.3) Finally, it is your mind that creates the music before you play it. You see/hear it in your head. Your interpretation, life experiences and emotions effect what you play.

Jan 6, 2012 - This is how I thought all through my playing. It's a great approach. I think he follows on that as well. He just takes that step to help young musicians get the music loud in their head, which is such a hard thing to do.
