Feb 18, 2012 - it is called a loonie beacause on the back of the coin it has a bird which is called...... a loon! Hence loonie it HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH destinguishing it from the american dollar!

ASDFGH8273927 Says:

Feb 21, 2012 - Yes, the origin of the term was the Canadian one dollar piece. However, the reason for the usage of the term was to differentiate it from the US one.

triwise Says:

Feb 23, 2012 - The Loonie was named after the Loon on the back of the coin. The Canadian people coined the phrase for the 1 and 2 dollar coins. The Toonie was called a dubloonie at first. The Canadian people didn't take too it, Kept calling it the Toonie. So the goverment changed the name for the people. Thats part of our History. It had nothing to do with the American Dollar.
