Title: Yvon Chouinard and the American Express Members Project Commercial
Added: Mar 4, 2010
Author: patagoniavideo
Duration: 1:4
Description:
Patagonia's founder, Yvon Chouinard, appears on an American Express commercial for their members project with Takepart.com. The piece was filmed in and around Ventura County by academy award winning cinematographer Robert Richardson and directed by Scott Hicks of "Shine" fame. The dam that's featured is the Matilija Dam, an outdated monstrosity that sits 18 miles upstream from Patagonia HQ on a tributary of the Ventura River. With its crumbling concrete and silt filled reservoir, Matilija Dam no longer serves any beneficial purpose. Its removal would allow native Southern Steelhead trout to once again use the river to spawn, and give local beaches a much needed boost in sediments (more sand) from the steep canyons of Matilija Creek. If successful, it would be largest dam ever removed in the United States. All proceeds that Yvon receives from the commercial will be divided between five of environmental groups of his choice: Concervacion Patagonica, Atlantic Salmon Federation, Freedom to Roam Coalition, Native Fish Society and Save our Wild Salmon.

Jun 22, 2010 - This commercial is confusing. There is way too much story. Why is he a dam buster? What led him to that? Where is this dam? He goes from climbing a mountain to trying to bust a dam. Does he climb the dam? Production wise this is first rate, but they bit off more then they could chew. How about 2- one minute long commercials, one about mountain climbing, one about dam busting?
tardbuster007 Says:
Jun 23, 2010 - get his ass to the gulf
AurianTitan Says:
Jun 24, 2010 - the mountain climbing symbolizes strength and victory--conquering the dam. Large dams are normally built around mountainous valleys so the mountains can act as a barrier to form a lake behind the dam. Why would you climb a dam when it is unstable and has a smooth surface? Why do you need to know where the dam is?
mrajholler Says:
Jun 24, 2010 - @aurianTitan I get the symbolism and am impressed by Mr. Chouinard. The constructution of the commercial causes it to lose narrative momentum when he says "..And I'm also a dam buster". Things suddenly go from one thing to another without the filmmakers establishing a solid connection between the two concepts of designing mountain climbing equipment and busting dams. I would imagine there is a longer cut of this commercial that does a better job but needed to be edited for time.

Jul 2, 2010 - I got to see 180 deg south when it premiered in Portland. It was great to see Yvon so active at his age. Yvon's 1% campaign is great and hopefully this members project will do some good.

Oct 2, 2010 - He said, it's a selfish thing to want to protect nature. So he hates nature? Wow, I'm not using American Express anymore.

Nov 19, 2010 - I'm not liking AMEX because of this commercial. There's probably good reason to take out or upgrade some dams. But, there's lots of better reasons to HAVE a dam where human people are the priority... drinking water reserves, clean power, etc. Which outweighs concerns over minimal wildlife impact. Generically saying "bust down dams" is irresponsible and illogical. Being a free market is right; the issue is that these wackos use the government to force others to bend to their will, which is wrong.

Jan 3, 2011 - This is disgusting. So-called environmentalists won't be happy until we are all living in caves, freezing in the dark.
upproducer Says:
Jan 5, 2011 - This and the two prior responses are some of the most unintelligent I've ever read. Are you serious? Think about it or the next Darwin award is for you and pals.
greengringo2003 Says:
Feb 25, 2011 - Yes! The hard-core "environmentalists" are in it for the control over other people. They are not happy people. They have an inner sickness that won't permit themselves to even like themselves. We are talking mental illness, people.
Alpuche2 Says:
Apr 18, 2011 - Before you make ludicrous assumptions....DO your HOMEWORK FIRST, thats the educated skeptic thing to do. Ventura County plans on using the water to preserve and save the ocean for life and people. We, the world is nearing the end of water reserves. The removal of the Matilija Dam with pervious roads,& other eco-friendly construction is to save water, create jobs by 10thousands, and save money. In the Camarillo area, they are building solar panals for the county.
Chilililabombwe Says:
Apr 23, 2011 - For those thinking we are running out of water - I was warned about that in a strategy session with a guru type three decades and his doomsday scenario did not come to reality. Also, Canada is abundant with water we are delighted to sell it to AmericansI I think we can all agree to keep the environment clean and it is people like Patagonia who give another view and I like that. But not to get people to live like they do in Africa. What amazes me is why do not go and live in Africa then?
MattKratochvil1 Says:
Apr 24, 2011 - It's a selfish thing to protect nature because we are a part of nature it's self that is what he means in the video

Jun 14, 2011 - Yvon Chouinard is a natural treasure for so many reasons. But for me, his love of wild places is the defining part of his legacy!

Jul 24, 2011 - I love this commercial for 5 reasons. 1) Rock climbing is awesome 2) the view @0:11 is amazing 3) Its about nature 4) The music and 5)that dam that he took out is near Ventura where my gma lives
nillis32 Says:
Nov 15, 2011 - .... just do some research on the dam's he's trying to destroy.
TheReliefer Says:
Apr 25, 2012 - I don't think the damn was meant to be there in the first place. Did the engineers in the 1940's hired a geologist? because of they did, they should considered the high levels of hot sulfur and mineral content right in these streams, thus would know it doesn't really support life there if there was a reservoir.I also think they should of consulted a native Chumash elder. They would of realized how beautiful, valuable, healing, and spiritual this place really is.

May 24, 2010 - Best commercial I've seen in a long time. First off, opening scene rock, being grasped by a hand...omg rock climbing commercial. Yes and no, this commercial has a message 'it's a selfish thing to want to protect nature." For the record i'm glad to be climbing in a age where I don't have to use pitons.BTW The Chief today was amazing. Here's to Queen Victoria!
