Apr 10, 2012 - yeah my number was rediculous it was one of those really tired moments didn't quite register lol. Yeah both my grandfathers were in the II World War one was in a tank destroyer in the 29th armoured, the other in the greenland patrol in the coast gaurd, and i had a great uncle named Joe ironically who landed on the beaches i think on Utah, first wave... he miraculously survived. He was from Lowell Mass. and he was decorated for valour as a war hero, my grandpa in the 29th was also decorated.

Apr 12, 2012 - both Letters and Flags were powerful in their own way. I watched them both recently, Flags first. i found it powerful as a movie which showed how much war screws up a person. Letters was powerful in revisiting the island again, watching the same battle but having compassion for the Japs- they are human beings too

Apr 16, 2012 - Utah wasn't a too highly contested beach. Thank god he didn't go in on Omaha, though.

Apr 17, 2012 - My grandfather's grandfather was a hungarian soldier, who fought in the massacre of Don-river in the Soviet-Union. He was captured, and was a captive at a Gulag in Siberia for 5 years.

May 24, 2012 - "If you have to kill someone - if you have to - is it somehow better to do it clean with a bullet through the head? Is it somehow worse to chop them up with an axe? And what if you have to kill ten, or a hundred, or a thousand? What if in doing it, you save a thousand or spare ten? What if you save yourself? What is the measure of a man, or of his murder? By what insane calculus can we answer questions like these? Should we even try?"

Apr 10, 2012 - Hmmm I thought you meant only Jewish deaths. In the Holocaust, I think the number is closer to around 8 million if you factor in all deaths, and in WWII in total, it's around 50-70 million soldier deaths. In total deaths for the era, civilian and military - it's a very high number. I think 600 million is highballing it a bit, but you've got the right general idea. War is hell.
