Apr 16, 2012 - You may take that opportunity, and may I take another opportunity to write that I humbly disagree with you. Not every film has to be fair and politically correct with regards to it's treatment of the sadism inherent in so many during the climate of war. Sometimes a film, or indeed any artwork, should be content to dissect a small yet still profoundly harrowing aspect of soldiery, leaving the greater politics of the matter to those whom have a specific message pertaining to it.

Apr 30, 2012 - De Niro is so amazing in this film, his performance is just impeccable, damn he's the greatest actor who has ever lived.

May 3, 2012 - During the Winter Soldier Investigation two Marines, Gordon Stewart and Chris Soares, testified that their Platoon Sergeant had a $1,000 bounty placed on his head. His crimes were listed as making the men polish their boots, shave every day, and cut their hair, as well as taking more than his quota of the beer allocated to his men. Gordon Stewart confessed: "Bounties were quite common, undoubtedly. I think everyone would agree."

May 3, 2012 - What Deerhunter tried to not tell Americans was this one:"By every conceivable indicator, our army that now remains in Vietnam is in a state approaching collapse, with individual units avoiding or having refused combat, murdering their officers and non commissioned officers, drug-ridden, and dispirited where not near mutinous. "THE COLLAPSE OF THE ARMED FORCESBy Col. Robert D. Heinl, Jr.North American Newspaper AllianceArmed Forces Journal, 7 June, 1971

May 3, 2012 - What Deer Hunter tried to not tell American was this:"Shortly after the costly assault on Hamburger Hill in mid-1969,the GI underground newspaper in Vietnam, "G.I. Says", publicly offered a $10,000 bounty on Lt. Col. Weldon Honeycutt, the officer who ordered(and led) the attack. Despite several attempts, however, Honeycutt managed to live out his tour and return Stateside."Another Hamburger Hill," (i.e., toughly contested assault), conceded a veteran major, is definitely out."
bandwagon22 Says:
May 3, 2012 - What Deer Hunter tried to not tell Americans was this:""Search and evade" (meaning tacit avoidance of combat by units in the field) is now virtually a principle of war, vividly expressed by the GI phrase, "CYA (cover your ass) and get home!" "THE COLLAPSE OF THE ARMED FORCESBy Col. Robert D. Heinl, Jr.North American Newspaper AllianceArmed Forces Journal, 7 June, 1971

May 3, 2012 - What Deer Hunter tried to not tell Americans was this:"Since 1970 the number of such sheets has increased 40% (up from 103 last fall). These journals are not mere gripe-sheets that poke soldier fun in the "Beetle Bailey" tradition, at the brass and the sergeants. "In Vietnam," writes the Ft Lewis-McChord Free Press, "the Lifers, the Brass, are the true Enemy, not the enemy." Another West Coast sheet advises readers: "Don't desert. Go to Vietnam and kill your commanding officer." "
bandwagon22 Says:
May 3, 2012 - "Men refuse to go. If a man is ordered to go to such and such a place he no longer goes through the hassle of refusing; he just packs his shirt and goes to visit some buddies at another base camp. Operations have become incredibly ragtag. Many guys don't even put on their uniforms any more... The American garrison on the larger bases are virtually disarmed. The lifers have taken our weapons from us and put them under lock and key. There have also been quite a few frag incidents in the battalion."
bandwagon22 Says:
May 3, 2012 - What Deer Hunter didn't tell was that there wasn't such a "ultra patriotic working class America" eagerly going to Vietnam. It's a pure myth. All the studies made in late 1960's and early 1970's have proved that it was poor, working class people, blacks, latinos, lower educated,+50 yr old who were against the war. Those pro-Vietnam War were more likely white, upper middle class, rich, higher educated - so called intellectuals (liberals or conservatives doesn't matter). So Cimino made a big lie.

Mar 31, 2012 - May I take this opportunity to declare officially that in my opinion The Deer Hunter is one of the worst films ever made, a rambling self indulgent, self aggrandising barf-fest steeped in manipulatively racist emotion, and notable primarily for its farcically melodramatic tone which is pitched somewhere between shrieking hysteria and somnambulist somberness.
