Title: Jerry Garcia on The Monkees, 1967
Added: May 27, 2011
Author: sittingnextto
Duration: 2:26
Description:
A clip from a 1967 interview, in which, pressed to put down The Monkees (yawn...), Jerry mans up and, like most musicians at the time, gives them props. Really, it was only journalists who hated the Monkees. Everyone from The Beatles and The Who to Buffalo Springfield and Frank Zappa gave much support to The Monkees.

Mar 2, 2012 - This is priceless. I am glad to know that some in the music industry appreciated what the Monkees did. Their music stands the test of time. I love it to this day. Because of the movie "Shrek", the music of the Monkees is opened to the younger generation. Seems that they love it too.
TheUnfortunate9 Says:
Mar 3, 2012 - Lennon told the Monkees they were the greatest comic talent since the Marx Brothers and that he never missed their show.

Apr 8, 2012 - jerry wouldn't put other people down for what they were doing, i like watching the monkees, and i prefer their version of "stepping stone" to the sex pistols version.

Apr 9, 2012 - I've seen the dead, I've seen the monkeys, to be honest the monkeys where better, i know that sounds wrong but lets face it how many times can you ad lib the same tunes? the monkeys may not have been great musicians but at least they rehearsed and where sober. i've seen some dead shows that just sucked beyond belief, luckily the whole audience was whacked out of their minds. i loved the monkees audience because they where to young for drugs,it was bubblegum.but perfect bubblegum

Apr 24, 2012 - As a former stringer with Rolling Stone who has seen The Monkees and The Grateful Dead,to place the Monkees in with the Ohio Express, The Shadows of Night, Lemon Pipers, 1910 Fruitgum Company, and others from 1968> is erroneous The Monkees were founded in 1966. Boyce and Hart were their song writers although Mike Nesbitt was an actual musician and a song writer to boot.
roman14032 Says:
Apr 24, 2012 - wll if you put it in terms of the actual late siies earliy seventies bublegum movement, yea your right, they were not a part of that

Apr 24, 2012 - I also thought the title page meant that Jerry had been a guest on the Monkees TV show. Misleading... But was also glad to hear Jerry Not put down the Monkees... :)
cowcghb Says:
Apr 29, 2012 - Anybody who puts down the Monkees is seriously misinformed, has probably never seen the comedic genius of the TV show (if they're my age, at least), and hasn't heard any songs besides Daydream Believer, I'm A Believer, the Theme Song and possibly Last Train to Clarksville. The day Davy died my facebook feed was flooded with youtube videos of just those first 2. I had to pick up the slack with some actual GOOD songs. Hehe.

May 2, 2012 - "because they where (sic) to (sic) young for drugs"Roman get off the drugs. Were you also too young for schoolin'? Oh and if you could tell what "the whole audience" was on, you were spending WAY too much time bothered by other people and not enough time listening to the music. Lastly, how many times?? 'till there's noting left to exploring the song... till it can't unfold anymore. go ask Coltrane if he tired of playing My Favorite Things. Then again "perfect bubblegum?" why am i even trying??

May 16, 2012 - I'm pretty sure Garcia didn't own a television in 1967; although I am fairly certain that he had friends that did...
norellpolk Says:
May 26, 2012 - where did you find this
sittingnextto Says:
May 26, 2012 - I found the interview on Archive.org. It's a long interview and I just excerpted this little bit. If you go to that site and search "Jerry Garcia Interview 1967" it should come up. But I don't remember what segment it's on.
TruegrassBoy Says:
May 26, 2012 - The Monkees were the beginning of the end for "real" bands. The producers learned they could create bands from scratch and patronize light headed fans. They would have the "cute" guy, the funky guy, the comedian, etc; all a prefab formula for airhead teeny-bopper consumption. This also has created a dearth of truly original music and controlled the direction that producers wanted it to go. Kind of like our elections - they choose your candidates for you and you think you have freedom of choice.
tommieparch Says:
May 26, 2012 - Jerry says the records of the Monkees were "pretty good, because they had the best studio musicians" He also inaccurately says studio singers did their earlier singing. (not true). Its was not Boyce & Hart singing.. I dont find this a ringing endorsement..

maximadog Says:
Mar 2, 2012 - Garcia may have been fucked up on drugs alot of the time, but he was also a shrewd business-man with a mind for what will and will not sell. He didn't become successful by accident.
