Apr 21, 2012 - The boosters separate well out over the Atlantic, and the area is cleared of all vessels by the Navy and Coast Guard. The booster recovery ship is right there. Barring extreme troubles, where the boosters land is pretty precisely predetermined. In the event of a disaster, they can be destroyed before they can do any harm.

Apr 25, 2012 - Best shuttle footage I've seen. When the SRB's are about to hit the water it appears as if something is ejected and hits the water just ahead of them. I know the nose cones are ejected when the parachutes are deployed but do you know what it is?

Apr 25, 2012 - that vid is a piece of art!

Apr 25, 2012 - Yes, a nozzle extention is jettisoned so that the impact of the water does less damage.

May 2, 2012 - Freaking awesome!

May 4, 2012 - There are regulations on the trajectories launch vehicles are permitted to take depending on launch site to minimize or eliminate that risk of hitting a city. The risk of hitting boats is small because of the size of the ocean compared to the surface area of boats on it, but precautions are made for this as well. When a launch vehicle gets flown as much as the shuttle was, you know a lot about how it will behave and can plan appropriately.

May 7, 2012 - What did I do wrong? I just commented on a spectacular piece of footage...you singled me out for your own reasons...inbox me and tell me why? Then we'll start talking...:-)

May 10, 2012 - nah, it has a parachute as you can see in the end :) just a simple mistake no worries.
bingbang3214 Says:
May 17, 2012 - yeah it is. Did you hear a few months ago about the satellite I think it was that was falling to earth but they didnt know where it was falling? The odds of it hitting people when it falls to earth are pretty low though.
4500intelx Says:
May 22, 2012 - well it's already planned where the SRB's and external tank will fall and declaring a zone where where no boats are allowed or aircrafts
NinjaboyKiller12 Says:
May 22, 2012 - I wana skydive from space•_•
miketh2005 Says:
May 26, 2012 - They can predict the general area of where it is going to land. They meant for it to land in the water. One of the reasons they built it in Florida. I have no idea about a boat. Maybe they figured the odds of that would be astronomical and didn't worry.
mariamole011 Says:
May 26, 2012 - the space view looks like a movie scene.

May 26, 2012 - thats so trippy man. Im curious as to what else is out there in space
jsebean Says:
May 27, 2012 - If you want to die, you'd burn up in the atmosphere :P
iDan122i Says:
May 28, 2012 - @bigbang3214 your talking about Phobos-Grunt? It's not a satellite, it was a probe sent to mars to carry a Chinese Martian orbiter, and a lander to land on Phobos, get samples and return to earth with samples. But in earth orbit after launch the computer went crazy and it turned off. It fell back to earth a month later. Luckily it fell in the pacific ocean. But if it was planned to fall on NY, they'd probably get the he'll outta there!
bitski488 Says:
May 29, 2012 - tell that to Joe Kittinger lol
ironmaiden66695 Says:
May 30, 2012 - You can skydive from the upper atmosphere though. If you look up you would see stars. Thats pretty close. In the 1950s it was done by the government. I dont know why but they did.
ChintamiAtmanegoro Says:
May 30, 2012 - america is wasted money and oil for nasa spaceship ?

thedebater88 Says:
Apr 19, 2012 - The launch followed an arced, ballistic trajectory out to the East, over the Atlantic. They know where it is going to go. There was no chance of the boosters coming back over land, and if they did, they hadself-destruct systems. As for boats, I believe NASA and the Coast Guard posted maritime warnings.
