Apr 24, 2012 - I think it's both. It all comes down to her eyes in my opinion. In the original "her eyes were sore" because she was crying from the notice of death. In this version I heard "her eyes did soar." As in she was super happy to see him. She had received the notice in error, as he was in fact alive. It's just a song and it's open to interpretation, but this version, I feel, that he is alive and he returns home to his wife who had just finished reading an erroneous notice of death.
