Title: Pete Seeger: Waist Deep in the Big Muddy

Added: Dec 18, 2008

Author: PopulistParty

Duration: 3:4

Description:
Aired on CBS at the height of the Vietnam War, this song holds just as much truth today...It was back in 1941.I was a member of a good platoon. We were on maneuvers in Lou'siana one nightBy the light of the moon. The Captain told us to ford a river. That's how it all begun. We were knee deep in the Big Muddy,And the big fool said to push on.The Sergeant said, "Sir, are you sureThis is the best way back to the base?""Sergeant, go on, I've forded this riverAbout a mile above this place. It'll be a little soggy, but just keep sloggin'.We'll soon be on dry ground."We were waist deep in the Big Muddy,And the big fool said to push on.The Sergeant said, "Sir, with all this equipment,No man will be able to swim.""Sergeant, don't be a Nervous Nelly,"The Captain said to him."All we need is a little determination.Men, follow me. I'll lead on."We were neck deep in the Big Muddy,And the big fool said to push on.All at once the moon clouded over.We heard a gurglin' cry.A few seconds later the Captain's helmetWas all that floated by.The Sergeant said, "Turn around, men.I'm in charge from now on."And we just made it out of the Big MuddyWith the Captain dead and gone.We stripped and dived and found his bodyStuck in the old quicksand.I guess he didn't know that the water was deeperThen the place he'd once before been.Another stream had joined the Big MuddyAbout a half mile from where we'd gone.We were lucky to escape from the Big MuddyWhen the big fool said to push on.Now I'm not going to point any moral —I'll leave that for yourself.Maybe you're still walking, you're still talking,You'd like to keep your health. But every time I read the papers, that old feeling comes on,We're waist deep in the Big MuddyAnd the big fool says to push on.Waist deep in the Big Muddy,The big fool says to push on.Waist deep in the Big Muddy,The big fool says to push on.Waist deep, neck deep,Soon even a tall man will be over his head. We're waist deep in the Big Muddy,And the big fool says to push on.

Sep 21, 2011 - This is a great song and directed at the CIA and Lyndon Johnson for stupidly getting us involved in the Vietnam War. If they would have not murdered Jack Kennedy and let him serve two terms in peace, this and other nasty adventures could have been avoided. Thanks for nothing boys.

Boelcke1919 Says:

Sep 23, 2011 - It bvrings back the old feelings, back when it was still possible to delude oneself into imagining this to be a free country. Wake up, America!!! Freedom died on November 22, 1963.

AllBobsAllTheTime Says:

Sep 26, 2011 - This sounds like our effort to "fight the real war" in Afghanistan although not sure how much mud is there.

AllBobsAllTheTime Says:

Sep 26, 2011 - Pete had some pretty nasty things to say about FDR wanting to ship the boys off to Europe as well.

AllBobsAllTheTime Says:

Sep 27, 2011 - Afghanistan is on its way to becoming this generation's Vietnam if we're not careful.

Seasass Says:

Sep 27, 2011 - Really? All I'm familiar with is the not-so-inspired "Dear Mr. President", where he seemed to be OK with that war, in spite of other disagreements he might have had with Roosevelt. Can you recommend some songs to check out that express a different opinion or quote me something?

AllBobsAllTheTime Says:

Sep 27, 2011 - Check out Washington Breakdown which begins: Franklin D., listen to me,You ain't a-gonna send me 'cross the sea,'Cross the sea, 'cross the sea, You ain't a-gonna send me 'cross the sea.You may say it's for defense,But that kinda talk that I'm against.

AllBobsAllTheTime Says:

Sep 27, 2011 - Not to forget Ballad of October 16th:Oh, Franklin Roosevelt told the people how he feltWe damn near believed what he saidHe said, "I hate war, and so does EleanorBut we won't be safe 'till everybody's dead."

goliath93588 Says:

Dec 14, 2011 - 6 people were told to push on by the big fool

gspendlove Says:

Jan 26, 2012 - Truth to Power, baby!

TheCrazyCougar Says:

Jan 30, 2012 - I find it ironic that the liberals of today fail to realize that they won the war of ideology during the Vietnam war and they now hold all the cherished positions in the halls of academe as well as in our government. But what have they done to improve our country other than to divide it via the class warfare mantra? Pete Seeger should direct his songs towards the college professors, the very ones who also supported Fidel Castro in his take over of Cuba.......

conantdog Says:

Feb 10, 2012 - Educate yourself Listen to Chris Hedges "Death of the liberal class" Or John pilger."Freedom next time"Both readings in many versions are on U Tube.

CronoDAS Says:

Apr 13, 2012 - Pete Seeger was indeed opposed to U.S. involvement in WWII at first; he changed his mind after Nazi Germany invaded Russia, at which point he decided that there were worse things than war and that Hitler was one of them. (Remember, Communism didn't become Obviously Evil until some time after WWII ended.)

Alumashka Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - Heh! Communism didn't become Obviously Evil even later. It was somewhat evil at after 1917 revolt, somewhat other evil during SWW, somewhat different evil during cold war... There is good and straight translation of this same song in Russian, but now, twenty years after fall of communism, not many people are interested in listening or singing it. They only want music like "Tyts-tyts-tyts and Upa-Upa", more beer, more sex, cooler phones and cars... etc. :-)

daaznkiller123 Says:

Apr 23, 2012 - communism isnt evil. its just an idea. the people who implement communism and become tyrants are the evil ones. Communism fails as an economic policy but its social policy is admirable but unrealistic....

GlassOrchidAftermath Says:

May 3, 2012 - Happy birthday Pete!

sauquoit13456 Says:

May 3, 2012 - Happy Birthday Pete Seeger; born on this day in 1919. {May 3rd}

electronmusicjunkie Says:

May 3, 2012 - This performance was from Pete Seger's 2nd appearance on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. CBS wouldn't let him do it the first time thinking the line about the president was a jab against president Johnson. After this received big attention in the press, CBS allowed him to do it the 2nd time around. Check out the DVD "Smothered:The Censorship Struggles Of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour".
