Description:
This is my 3-year-old son. He loves poetry and he loves to memorize. Here he is reciting a poem called "Litany" by Billy Collins. Here is the text: "You are the bread and the knife, the crystal goblet and the wine. You are the dew on the morning grassand the burning wheel of the sun.You are the white apron of the baker, and the marsh birds suddenly in flight. However, you are not the wind in the orchard, the plums on the counter,or the house of cards. And you are certainly not the pine-scented air. There is just no way that you are the pine-scented air.It is possible that you are the fish under the bridge, maybe even the pigeon on the general's head, but you are not even closeto being the field of cornflowers at dusk. And a quick look in the mirror will showthat you are neither the boots in the cornernor the boat asleep in its boathouse. It might interest you to know, speaking of the plentiful imagery of the world, that I am the sound of rain on the roof.I also happen to be the shooting star, the evening paper blowing down an alleyand the basket of chestnuts on the kitchen table.I am also the moon in the treesand the blind woman's tea cup.But don't worry, I'm not the bread and the knife. You are still the bread and the knife. You will always be the bread and the knife, not to mention the crystal goblet and--somehow--the wine."

Apr 17, 2012 - Odd. I just watched the video of Billy Collins doing this piece, and the audience laughing as if the poem is a comedic lighthearted bit of insight. Obviously the kid has a natural connection to how these words speak.

Apr 24, 2012 - 642,019 Views...and 600,000 of them were from me. ;D No,but it all honesty. Your child nailed this with such accuracy and the tone in his voice gives off the impression that he does,in fact, comprehend the words he is reciting. This is just too cute. I'm glad I stumbled upon this. :)

Apr 28, 2012 - the reflection in his voice shows he does understand what he is saying. He knows exactly where to inflect the rise and fall in his voice. He is just a very gifted child
SkyeRangerNick Says:
Apr 30, 2012 - Indeed ... in certain spots (in the four poems his mom has put up on YouTube) he not only inflects, as you say, but where and how are his own devising, so to speak. In my view.

May 5, 2012 - I saw this video over a year ago & it means a lot to me. I graduated from high school almost 12 years ago, with undiagnosed ADHD, and had very little confidence in my own intelligence or abilities after a fairly miserable school experience. It can still be a struggle- but your lovely son, with his fantastic inflection & the happy shriek he gave when he finished the poem, gave me the idea & encouragement to memorize one of my favorite poems- "anyone lived in a pretty how town". It took a couple

May 5, 2012 - (opps. (continued from below...)..it took a couple hours, walking around the park & reciting each verse over & over to the surrounding trees- but it was a real gift, to be reminded that if I wanted to- (instead of laying around & watching tv) I too, could fill my mind with dancing words to journey along with me throughout the day :)So Thank You.

May 10, 2012 - I LOVE how he says, "graaasss". It is so poetic. NPR did a nice piece where the young lad and Billy Collins met. It was very sweet.

May 14, 2012 - I happened to click on this video just to make sure my speakers were working after I plugged them in. What a gift! Thanks for sharing this. What a special little boy--he will always be the bread and the knife--and the butter and strawberry jam! I would love to hear him recite Billy Collins' "The Lanyard."

Apr 17, 2012 - I am sure that having something in his hands helps Samuel deliver the poetry ~ the functioning of the right and left hemispheres of the brain show time and again that the physical activity facilitates the higher order mental process.
