Title: Mark Roth: Suspended animation is within our grasp

Added: Mar 15, 2010

Author: TEDtalksDirector

Duration: 18:42

Description:
http://www.ted.com Mark Roth studies suspended animation: the art of shutting down life processes and then starting them up again. It's wild stuff, but it's not science fiction. Induced by careful use of an otherwise toxic gas, suspended animation can potentially help trauma and heart attack victims survive long enough to be treated.TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate. Jul 25, 2011 - This would be nice to have if a loved one has a bad accident and needs medical attention that could take too long to get to.

3200manpro Says:

Aug 1, 2011 - He fucking saved thousands of babies, clap people

Anthropoid3 Says:

Sep 15, 2011 - Sounds to me like that was a different gas from the company that merged with Ikaria:"And also the wonderful scientists and business people at Ikaria. One thing those people did out there was take this technology of hydrogen sulfide, which is this start-up company that's burning venture capital very quickly, and they fused it with another company that sells another toxic gas that's more toxic than hydrogen sulfide, and they give it to newborn babies who would otherwise die..."

Oct 2, 2011 - This is so awesome!!! (As long as nobody has to hear "Hello. You have been in suspension for NINE NINE NINE NINE")

MacGreggToo Says:

Oct 25, 2011 - It is not Hydrogen Sulfide that is saving these babes it is xenon gas! I don't think he had anything to do with the xenon research. Clearly his research has just gone to human testing... babes are human so this can't be the same gas and if you listen closely he does not mention what gas is used in the hospitals. I expect it is a competing product.

andreeaweed Says:

Nov 4, 2011 - like frankenstein or what? ...i think the religion has something to say about that...anyway, i think this is interesting and revolution discovery

juliacotic Says:

Nov 6, 2011 - Very creative video.

thinkahol Says:

Nov 9, 2011 - it would probably be a different number if it was some long time chosen at random, numbers beginning in 9 are much less common. Google Benford's Law

appleobsessed1 Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - Er... you know I was referencing the game Portal 2, right?

thinkahol Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - nope lol

crudhousefull Says:

Jan 5, 2012 - You have to save a 100,000 at TED to get proper applause

crudhousefull Says:

Jan 5, 2012 - Something tells me that you might be able to treat aging with a therapy that uses this gas. Nothing too extreme, but something used in repetition. Gotta love insight with absolutely no logic

TheGamblingApocalyps Says:

Jan 19, 2012 - @pokemonkiller20Wikipedia isn't a source; rather, it's a gateway to sources. If you check the footers of each article, you'll see a list of actual sources.

pokemonkiller20 Says:

Jan 19, 2012 - You don't understand my point.

TheGamblingApocalyps Says:

Jan 23, 2012 - @pokemonkiller20You're saying Wikipedia isn't a viable source because people can edit it. I'm saying that you shouldn't use Wikipedia as a source at all, but rather the reference that the Wiki article cites. Now if the entire article is bollocks and the references are bogus, then that's another matter. I personally have never come across an article like that. Pages that are farcical or vandalized are usually corrected/taken down very quickly.

pokemonkiller20 Says:

Jan 23, 2012 - You see, this is why I don't like it when people talk about other peoples business. The cites of Wikipedia had nothing to do with our conversation.

triggerhappy56 Says:

Mar 12, 2012 - Their speeches are timed, it is usually considered more polite to save your applause for after the speech is finished.

bellefilleayisien Says:

Apr 18, 2012 - Awesome? lol, y'all folks are late. Black people been doing this for centuries in Africa until the white man came & stopped us w/ the catholic church & fake religion. Matter of fact in Haiti there's BEEN a zombie phenomenon; scientists from Harvard, & schools worldwide been tryin to figure out how we put people in a dead like manner & wake em up (even save their souls in bottles). White folks are thieves. When black ppl do it it's voodoo...when white ppl do it its science. Smh, give me a break.

Cappurnikus Says:

May 4, 2012 - How did you turn saving babies and suspended animation into a black vs. white thing? Are you suggesting that all "White folks" have secretly conspired to steal voodoo recipe's and take credit for it? Seems a bit outlandish if you ask me.

NeilaAzur Says:

May 5, 2012 - Well... im apalled at how a white guy stands in front of an audience in a classy suit discussing these paranormal discoveries& be accepted w/ glee yet i know for a FACT that a/an African(s) from a mud hut can claim (as they been for millenia's) the same & even much beyond this & ppl look at them like insane voodoo heathens...that hypocrosy irritates me. & yes white ppl stole a lot of stuff from black ppl all the while making us look like porch monkeys to the rest of the world & even ourselves.

NeilaAzur Says:

May 5, 2012 - For instance if an african person in bright african outfit & crooked teeth, not owning college degrees said that he knew how to save a persons soul, make someone into a zombie, turn a person into an animal, fly, cause storms with keywords to the atmosphere/universe (this last thing was done by ancient african elders & is the only thing that ive listed that "may" be extinct)...you all would think he was crazy. BUT, let a white clean cut "scholar" say it & folk just may consider the possibility...

Cappurnikus Says:

May 5, 2012 - I recently listened to a podcast, the subject of which was Zombie creation in Haiti. They didn't mention race throughout the whole show because the race of the individual that discovered this process is irrelevant. The purpose of this video is to bring to light the benefits of this process for ALL RACES. The only racism happening here is from those claiming to be a victim, while offensively waiving fingers and generalizing. Unfortunately racism is a two way street.

Cappurnikus Says:

May 5, 2012 - I don't get it. Why claim that this man has stolen this process from a person of your race out of the blue when there was no mention of race throughout the whole video. To generalize and judge a person based on the color of their skin without knowing them as an individual is racist. To claim that all white people steal from black people is such a generalization and is flat out racist.

NeilaAzur Says:

May 5, 2012 - im not saying that he particularly stole it. Im saying that the ancient people of the earth, also known as melanated people (black folk) have been practicing this type of phenomenon & much more for millenia's but when african/black ppl talk about it, they're seen as uncivilized crazy voodoo followers but when whites talk about it ppl listen & are in awe. For a fact there HAVE been practices taken out of rural black countries & applied to science/medicine..watch: "the serpent and the rainbow".

mano1355 Says:

May 13, 2012 - they might have practiced some form of it way back in older times but they definitely did not have the understanding of it like we do now with modern technologies. Not to mention, you are using a fictional movie that was made for entertainment as a reference to your statement.
