His girl just dumped him. For this time period, this was the first song expressing a sadness or a loss. The other melodies of the early Beatles years were much more upbeat and danceable

May 4, 2012 - You could count that, but I wouldn't. "In Spite of All the Danger" was a McCartney-Harrison song. "Don't Bother Me" was the first song that Harrison wrote by himself, as a Beatle (i.e. not part of the Quarrymen), and to appear on an album. Also, because it wasn't released to the public until 1995 it would be hard to claim it as the first. But to some extent, you are correct that it could be considered the first.

May 4, 2012 - "You Know What To Do" was recording in 1964, "Don't Bother Me" was recorded in 1963. Technically it should be, "First song recorded on a Beatles album." Because I'm sure Harrison 'wrote' songs before this (but I think everyone has written at least one song in their life). It is funny though, because Harrison was never taken as seriously as he should have been taken as a writer. Look at his hits "Something" and "Here Comes The Sun" are great. I'd say Harrison was more consistent.
