Title: Tree felling using a "Danish Pie Cut"

Added: Oct 16, 2008

Author: mikepepler

Duration: 0:54

Description:
http://peplers.blogspot.com/ This is my chainsaw instructor demonstrating a cut he called the "Danish Pie", as he first saw it years ago in Denmark, and they referred to the the supporting block of wood as a "pie slice". It's a combination of a boring cut and a split level cut - boring through the tree will help avoid it splitting, and the split level part allows you to get a felling lever in to push it against the direction it is leaning in.

Mar 22, 2011 - this is the safest method for tree felling. this is the only method that we have learned at our school. and btw it's a swedish method developed at my school so you should call it Burträsk-metoden. and i hate all that talk about small saws. why use a big saw if you cutting trees that arent bigger than 25 inches.

mikepepler Says:

Mar 22, 2011 - Thanks, that's interesting to know. My instructor first saw it in Denmark, which was why he gave it that name when he taught it to us.

Mar 22, 2011 - this is great cut but if you need to do quicker felling then use split level an split level is great for felling in windy conditions =]

mikepepler Says:

Mar 23, 2011 - Yes, I agree. One of my other videos shows a split level cut. The "Danish pie", or "Burträsk-metoden" (in Sweden) is a more complicated version of it, for use when a tree is also at risk of splitting and doing a "barber chair".

norcallogger Says:

Apr 17, 2011 - that would be a huge waist of time why not just cut a face and then a back cut thats to much time waisted on such a small tree

mikepepler Says:

Apr 17, 2011 - It's intended for bigger trees, it was just being demoed for us on that tree.

HenryLT Says:

Apr 26, 2011 - very true

rbinventor Says:

May 18, 2011 - Well I must clear my self by saying that its unecesary using this method when the trees are small or you have a safe leaning on them.

MsAbbydo Says:

May 22, 2011 - I would use the tounge ang grove technique lot quicker and safe than that, especially with big trees.lol

speckspeck Says:

Jun 3, 2011 - great video, but try to draw a diagram before, because one can't see what you are attempting from behind the tree...everyone seems to think this is a split-level, is it?

mikepepler Says:

Jun 4, 2011 - The instructor did give us a diagram, but it didn't occur to in the video - I was just trying to capture the action - sorry. It's a combination of a split level and a boring cut, if that makes sense?

SuperSHAUNTHESHEEP Says:

Jun 24, 2011 - is this not the dog tooth used for cutting trees that have a lot of lean it stops them splitting out before the final cut is complete.where as a split level when you put in your felling bar you bring your saw in at a slight angle and up to your henge .I could be wrong though :-)

mikepepler Says:

Jun 25, 2011 - Isn't the 'dog tooth' another name for the 'boring' cut? Anyway, this 'Danish pie' cut incorporates the slot-boring of the 'boring' cut with the split level bit as well. You maybe need to see it in front of you to really see how it works. To be honest I've never used it - I only took this video when our course instructor demonstrated it. It's only useful for trees that need a boring/dogtooth cut, but also have a slight lean and so need a lever. Pretty rare I think!

SuperSHAUNTHESHEEP Says:

Jun 25, 2011 - either way its a very good cut to learn thanks for the vid.

H9YP649UIBTYH7 Says:

Jun 25, 2011 - took like an hour to cut down one tree

mikepepler Says:

Jun 26, 2011 - That's why you don't use it very often, just when it's useful.

LordJohnson91 Says:

Sep 24, 2011 - This cut is called a split level, it is used for when trees are leaning against the direction of fall.

mikepepler Says:

Sep 24, 2011 - Actually, it's a bit more complicated than a normal split level (I've done a video of a standard split level cut too). It's kind of a cross between a split level and a boring cut.Mike

localcrew Says:

Nov 24, 2011 - It is a boring cut. Just not in the way that you think it is. Hey, I'm just messin' with you! It's good to know these different methods of felling trees. Even if you are from Denmark.

ohgr8thatguy Says:

Jan 3, 2012 - i want pie now

cadets318 Says:

Feb 9, 2012 - I call this cut the boring cut. It's similar in style anyway.

smokestack56 Says:

Feb 20, 2012 - UUMMMMMMMMMM Piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeee

mikepepler Says:

Feb 20, 2012 - Yeah, it is similar, just leaves a little 'pie' slice at the back to support the tree till you're ready to fell.

nippermok Says:

Mar 6, 2012 - I use this cut a lot for back leaners it is such a time saver and a lot safer than getting the rope out I find.

DancesWithTrees100 Says:

Apr 3, 2012 - Nice example of a split level fell with felling leaver - wish all of the videos on here showed the best practice for directional controlled felling - good on you
