Lyrics are also below-A long, long time ago...I can still rememberHow that music used to make me smile. And I knew if I had my chanceThat I could make those people danceAnd, maybe, they'd be happy for a while. But february made me shiverWith every paper I'd deliver.Bad news on the doorstep;I couldn't take one more step.I can't remember if I criedWhen I read about his widowed bride,But something touched me deep insideThe day the music died.So bye-bye, miss american pie.Drove my chevy to the levee,But the levee was dry.And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and ryeSingin', "this'll be the day that I die."this'll be the day that I die."Did you write the book of love,And do you have faith in God above,If the Bible tells you so? Do you believe in rock 'n roll,Can music save your mortal soul,And can you teach me how to dance real slow? Well, I know that you're in love with him`cause I saw you dancin' in the gym.You both kicked off your shoes.Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.I was a lonely teenage broncin' buckWith a pink carnation and a pickup truck,But I knew I was out of luckThe day the music died.I started singin',"bye-bye, miss american pie."Drove my chevy to the levee,But the levee was dry.Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and ryeAnd singin', "this'll be the day that I die."this'll be the day that I die."Now for ten years we've been on our ownAnd moss grows fat on a rollin' stone,But that's not how it used to be.When the jester sang for the king and queen,In a coat he borrowed from james deanAnd a voice that came from you and me,Oh, and while the king was looking down,The jester stole his thorny crown. The courtroom was adjourned; No verdict was returned. And while lennon read a book of marx,The quartet practiced in the park,And we sang dirges in the darkThe day the music died.We were singing,"bye-bye, miss american pie."Drove my chevy to the levee,But the levee was dry.Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and ryeAnd singin', "this'll be the day that I die."this'll be the day that I die."Helter skelter in a summer swelter. The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,Eight miles high and falling fast.It landed foul on the grass. The players tried for a forward pass,With the jester on the sidelines in a cast. Now the half-time air was sweet perfumeWhile the sergeants played a marching tune.We all got up to dance,Oh, but we never got the chance!`cause the players tried to take the field; The marching band refused to yield.Do you recall what was revealedThe day the music died? We started singing,"bye-bye, miss american pie."Drove my chevy to the levee,But the levee was dry.Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and ryeAnd singin', "this'll be the day that I die."this'll be the day that I die."Oh, and there we were all in one place,A generation lost in spaceWith no time left to start again. So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!Jack flash sat on a candlestickCause fire is the devil's only friend.Oh, and as I watched him on the stageMy hands were clenched in fists of rage.No angel born in hellCould break that satan's spell. And as the flames climbed high into the nightTo light the sacrificial rite,I saw satan laughing with delightThe day the music diedHe was singing,"bye-bye, miss american pie."Drove my chevy to the levee,But the levee was dry.Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and ryeAnd singin', "this'll be the day that I die."this'll be the day that I die."I met a girl who sang the bluesAnd I asked her for some happy news,But she just smiled and turned away.I went down to the sacred storeWhere I'd heard the music years before,But the man there said the music wouldn't play. And in the streets: the children screamed,The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed. But not a word was spoken; The church bells all were broken. And the three men I admire most:The father, son, and the holy ghost,They caught the last train for the coastThe day the music died. And they were singing,"bye-bye, miss american pie."Drove my chevy to the levee,But the levee was dry.And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and ryeSingin', "this'll be the day that I die."this'll be the day that I die."They were singing,"bye-bye, miss american pie."Drove my chevy to the levee,But the levee was dry.Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and ryeSingin', "this'll be the day that I die."

ScreamingByte Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - that's actually "The Byrds flew off with a fallout shelter". It's a reference to The Byrds who got in trouble for drugs - their "Eight Miles High" song was popular but they got in trouble for smoking grass (weed) "falling fast it fell foul on the grass". The song isn't just about Buddy Holly, that's just a time reference for the start of the fall of America from faith in God to faith in rock star musicians, culminating at Altamont - 1969. FFS learn some history.

ScreamingByte Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @ScreamingByte Should add that "fallout shelter" was slang in the day for drug rehab.

31guitar Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @curtishasti An 8 minute song with all these metaphors all about Buddy holly?

joycjm Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - the day the music died was the day Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valen died. Music died with them. The levy was dry that day, and the American pie went bye bye. It was a tragic day for music in America. A sad sad loss. What an icon created to honor that wonderful talent that was lost that day... a generation lost in space. A truly great song

SPCseries Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @hcelentano dead wrong, the meaning of the song has to do with a plane crash that killed some major recording artists of that era, Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, to name a couple. Look things up before you spew your politics or better yet, learn about America music history first.

SPCseries Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - you also dead wrong about the chevy to the levy, look things up so I dont have sit and tech you. It's means they went drinking but the levy was dry.

doublechunkfunk Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @SPCseries Bro, read the damn lyrics. All that for a couple of dead musicians? Nah... This shit is about God: Father, Son and Holy Ghost taking a train for the coast.

hyena419 Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - I'll never look att his song the same way ever again

CrapAt0ItsBest Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - I just read what Glenn Beck said, and now, this song is creeping me out.

nsousa817 Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - Beck got much of his "explanation" from Bob Dearborn's analysis from 1972, nothing new. He just decided to focus on religion and politics rather McLean's deep love of music.

MasterTenku Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @hcelentano Actually, it's about a plane crash that killed quite a few members of great bands - hence the 'music' died.

7MrAwEsOmEvId7 Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - im only 15 , but this song is REALLY good

EoLoLoIoOoT Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @7MrAwEsOmEvId7 Wow, your 15 and like old music, Everyone is so fucking amazed.

7MrAwEsOmEvId7 Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @EoLoLoIoOoT hope thats not you trying to be smart bro. you dont know who the fuck i am or what the fuck im about so watch who ur talking to

Atlasshrugging18 Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - "I saw Obama laughing with delight, the day the music died"Music = Capitalism this is my interpretaion.

flyboy248 Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @hcelentano wow, and this song was written when 3 great musicians died in a plane crash.

MisterAwesome93 Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @moski3 Yes. Beck is a great source of valuable rational information. Yes, this is dripping with sarcasm

BVBlover47 Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - like if ur listening to this in 2012!!!!!!!

MYNAMEISTEDNOTED Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @BVBlover47 NO. FUCK YOU.

DozerfleetProd Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @MisterAwesome93 Beck got the information from the anecdotes of Mclean himself, as well as other sources. So it wasn't mere conjecture. I suppose if Glenn Beck were to quote Amy Lee that "Lithium" is about relaxation, you'd insist it was about the drug. Just because no matter what Amy says, it has to be wrong if Glenn Beck agrees with it.

FBHTandGD Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - <3

kwcook1998 Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - is it just me or does this kind have the same tune as piano man by billy Joel

TriBabyOh Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - When Don McClean was asked, what does this song mean, he replied "it means I never have to work another day in his life." meaning he made an ungodly amount of money from this song.true shit.

MisterAwesome93 Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - I'm confused... I thought this song was about a jester that liked to watch sports?

MisterAwesome93 Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - @DozerfleetProd Glenn Beck is an idiot. Hands down. I refuse to listen to anything he says... no matter his sources.
