Mar 2, 2011 - Respond to this video... @gamlerik1 Yeah, I considered removing that but he continues to talk through it and it would have meant removing/ hacking his response to the current revolutions in middle east, and as he says "old age is like an obstacle race"... It's partly about what he is saying but also about the physical / emotional aspect of him giving a lecture. My favourite bit is at the end where he listens to the prolonged applause.

gamlerik1 Says:

Mar 2, 2011 - Thank you for explaining. I agree - it is a moving lecture and should not be chopped up. That was a bad idea, but maybe just muting the audiotrack for a second here and there while keeping the original available... It's not important. The most important thing is making it available. Thanks again.

Mar 4, 2011 - Another great vid, thanks.

Mar 25, 2011 - If labor is controlled or abused by capitalism, then why does not labor utilize it's own resource and produce for it's self? Do people have capital in their labor? Do people have the ability to produce & provide for themselves through individual endeavor? If we expect the "public" to provide for the "public welfare" are we putting burden on the laborers to produce for the public which is not producing? Thereby enslaving the labor which produces? Labor becomes slave to non labor.

Jun 6, 2011 - It is a brilliant video. Well done to the recorder and to Professor Hobsbawm

Jul 20, 2011 - A unique historian, intelligent, wise, creator of masterpieces that any lover of history should read.

marceloelfilosofo Says:

Jul 20, 2011 - have you ever read "the capital" by Karl Marx?

raskel71 Says:

Jul 21, 2011 - @marceloelfilosofo No I have not read "The Capital" by Marx, however I have studied "The Communist Manifesto" by Marx & Engels. I have not found any where in history that Marxist ideas have lead to anything other than further enslavement of the laborer & worse living conditions for mankind. I shall read Marx's "Das Kapital", thank you for commenting.

governmentdidit Says:

Aug 19, 2011 - "If one understands that socialism is not a share-the-wealth programme, but is in reality a method to consolidate and control the wealth, then the seeming paradox of super-rich men promoting socialism becomes no paradox at all. Instead, it becomes logical, even the perfect tool of power-seeking megalomaniacs. Communism or more accurately, socialism, is not a movement of the downtrodden masses, but of the economic elite." - Gary Allen

Dec 31, 2011 - quite right not to have edited out his physical struggle. I found it moving, and serves to underline the sharpness of his mind at a good old age.

Jan 28, 2012 - Hehe, i read most of his work and books and this is the first time i hear him speak.

MrLovethelife Says:

Feb 15, 2012 - what makes him vile?

Bastiat90 Says:

Feb 16, 2012 - Saying 20,000,000 dead would have justified the Soviet experiment had it worked. I think it was Camus who said a responsibility to history absolves one of a responsibility towards humanity. Hobsbawm would do well to weigh upon those words.

secallen Says:

Feb 23, 2012 - CHECK THOSE F**KING LUGS

MrLovethelife Says:

Feb 29, 2012 - yea that does sound inexcusable....only just found Hobsbawm recently, definitely a genius but a bit of a Stalinist :(

Bastiat90 Says:

Feb 29, 2012 - He's brilliant no doubt... as a historian he probably equals Braudel or Macauley. But that intellect was wasted on an evil ideology that sacrificed millions on the hope of a better tomorrow.

MrLovethelife Says:

Feb 29, 2012 - shame :(David Harvery, Hobsawm, Chomsky who else? I could listen to these ideas all day!

Bastiat90 Says:

Mar 1, 2012 - You want left wing or right wing or both? For the Left, try Perry Anderson. For the Right, try Hayek or Rothbard.

Malthus0 Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - 11:18 ''Came to power in a country in which everybody knew it wasn't ready for those changes'' That would be everybody except Lenin himself then. Lenin thought that the signs of division of labour in the peasent villages showed that Russia had acheved capitalism and was ready for revolution. Whether he believed it or was just being propaganist it was quite mad by orthodox Marxist standards.
