A family trip to Boblo Island, what used to be a popular amusement park for many years. We check out some abandoned buildings and the curious observation tower, now controlled by "Homeland Security". The island is now a place of private residences and a few ghosts.

KnechtRuprecht1010 Says:

Jan 18, 2012 - Hahaha! Yes, much cheaper.

jhowarth1974 Says:

Jan 20, 2012 - That 2 story building was likely the old dance hall. 2nd largest in the country of its time.

jhowarth1974 Says:

Jan 20, 2012 - After some more video watching it was actually the Carousel pavilion. I guess it had a carousel in it and other things...

ScentedNectar Says:

Jan 22, 2012 - Wasn't one of those old buildings used for roller skating, the one the older kids (and my mother) went to while us younger ones were on rides? I might be mixing that up though, with somewhere else I went as a kid. Going to Boblo Island was a yearly event for me growing up in Windsor. :)

reloading2005 Says:

Feb 1, 2012 - Wow, I went there in the mid 80s when I was in 8th grade. Sad to see it like this now.

normandyangel Says:

Feb 1, 2012 - where in Detroit is boblo island

development602ify Says:

Feb 20, 2012 - @scentednectar Yes, the large building was originally a dance hall - designed by Albert Kahn and commissioned by Henry Ford. In its later years, it also hosted roller skating, the Dodge'm Cars and the Nightmare roller coaster (which was essentially just the relocated Wild Mouse - but in the dark).

development602ify Says:

Feb 20, 2012 - Boblo Island closed down essentially because of a feud between the park's final ownership group, M.Moodenbaug and L.Benaroya (real estate developers based out of Seattle, WA) Benaroya went behind Moodenbaugh's back when he was in a near-fatal car accident in 1993. The park had an operating loss of $2 million (in their only season of operations). Benaroya determined that the value of the property/hard assets far exceeded their $6.3 million investment, so he sold the island off as spare-parts

greencoman Says:

Mar 20, 2012 - So where is this exactly located the U.S. or Canada?

development602ify Says:

Mar 21, 2012 - It is an island located in the mouth of the Detroit River, near Lake Erie. It is in Canadian waters, and is technically a part of Amherstberg, Ontario.

jackedup1630 Says:

Mar 24, 2012 - I didn't even know u could still go over there. I went there right before they closed I was prolly 6 or 7.

xxxVJ300xxx Says:

Mar 26, 2012 - This park closed sometime after I was born, a shame it was taken down. I'm trying to poke around for park maps and anything helping hint the roller coaster track layouts of this park but it's a bit rought to find.

BizzarreProductions Says:

Mar 29, 2012 - It wasn't the "the blacks," it was gang members who happened to be black. If the gangs were white, the island would have closed in the same way.

1954murphy Says:

May 7, 2012 - "Gang members who happened to be black" It's not just Boblo, it's all of detroit thats been killed. I have never been a racist, nor do I hate anyone or anything but, sometimes I wonder. I grew up in detroit and saw it's slow death.
