Mar 17, 2012 - There was a movie telling a story of one possible explanation of the suicide, but Bobbie Gentry never said, herself. The exact reason isn't necessarily even the point of the song, it's more about how people react to it. Maybe.Great song, great performance of it. I've always found it weird when they plunk the performer in the middle of the audience like that, though, so that some people have their backs to her, and others are looking at her back.

Apr 3, 2012 - Where are the people that can sing like this today? They just do not exist.
Jay Lee Says:
Apr 15, 2012 - The people unfortunate to be sitting facing away from her are watching the performance on the auditorium monitors. Surly not big jumbo-trons, and a poor excuse for the real thing.

May 16, 2012 - She is what you call a woman. Absolutely gorgeous, fantastic singer, God, how I wish she would make a comeback while there is still time. How old is she? Born in 1944, nearly 68. Come on, Bobbie, you know it makes sense. You've still got millions of fans. Unleash your singing talent onto an unsuspecting younger audience.

May 30, 2012 - I don't understand what it was that was thrown off the Choctaw Bridge. Seems I missed the actual story after all-- can someone tell me what it means that she was with him just before he died, and won't tell anyone what was going on but still mourns him What WAS going on? I've loved this song - my parents bought it when I was about 5 but still, i wish someone would clue me in.
NedNickerson2010 Says:
May 30, 2012 - Bobbie Gentry gave an interview when the song first came out and said the song was based on a true event, but that she would never explain what was thrown off the bridge or why Billie Joe jumped. When the movie came out, Herman Raucher, the screenplay writer, asked Bobbie Gentry why Billie Joe jumped and she said she didn't know. So, in the movie, it was a rag doll that was thrown off the bridge. Billie Joe jumped because of guilt he felt after having a drunken gay encounter with a local townsman.

May 30, 2012 - This would be a good song for Susan Tedeschi's voice.
