Feb 4, 2012 - Who's the black lady?????? That's the great Mavis Staples playing with the familly band The Staple Singers. The Black man as you might call him was Pops, his dad, a friend of Dr. King and someone who used his band for creating great songs and fight for civil rights She's actually 80 and last year recorded a splendid album produced by Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), you can find in this site she and Jeff playing accoustic the couples of songs Jeff wrote for her. I'm only 36 and I love this people.

brooklynbridgealias Says:
Feb 6, 2012 - @yaggazoozy The original singer is singing this song - the DRUMMER - LEVON HELM, you putz. Some of the other verses are shared with the Staples Singers and of course, the verse about 'Chester' the 'Dog' is sung by Rick Danko (he usually did that verse). You are a triple schmuck.
tharper1961 Says:
Feb 6, 2012 - If this is the origional lead singer, WTF happened to his voice? I may be a triple Schmuck, but at least I dont lack the ability to inform someone of correct information without calling names. You might want to work on that, but thanks for the info anyways.

Feb 8, 2012 - @yaggazoozy you have obviously never seen the last waltz. and since you dont know the "origional" singers name. Both your post & YOU SUCK!
tharper1961 Says:
Feb 8, 2012 - Why call names asshole? I thought this video had a different singer. He did not sound the same on this video. Like I said, his voice sounded like he was on helium. The studio version sounds NOTHING like this videos version.I like The Band..just not this version.
BarstoolBlues33 Says:
Feb 8, 2012 - Mavis Staples has the greatest female voice of all time.

mattybluegrass Says:
Feb 9, 2012 - that noise at 2:17 (which you cant really hear if its not 480) is that Levon or Pops? Levon's mouth moves but it sounds like it should be Pops. (I hope its Levon)
joeyd1957 Says:
Feb 9, 2012 - @iangcunningham I don't dig it.They should take a load off being who knows ???
iangcunningham Says:
Feb 10, 2012 - @tharper1961 I respect your opinion, but general consensus among musicians I know and basically anyone who knows music is that this is the premier version of this song. The Staples make it so soulful and haunting. In my record collection I have 9 different versions of The Weight, and this is by far the one I listen to the most....
iangcunningham Says:
Feb 10, 2012 - @yaggazoozy you sir...are an idiot.
