MarkJSau Says:

Dec 4, 2011 - I'm not sure how a song from Carousel was sung "in defiance during World War II" when the musical premiered on Broadway on 19 April 1945 (19 days before VE Day), or how it has any "long wartime association with patriotic British music".

PUAlum Says:

Dec 11, 2011 - Thank you for this! I never knew that. I've got several recordings of UK groups singing this song. I've always loved the song ....but sort of wondered at its popularity "over there". Makes the lyrics all the more powerful imagining that great generation of Londoners using it to help brace their nerves!

grimTales1 Says:

Feb 4, 2012 - If it was ever sung during WWII it must have been very late since the song was only written and composed in 1945, but it is a wonderful song of defiance and I can imagine it being sung in situations like that. Very moving song.
