Title: The Story of Electronics (2010)
Added: Nov 4, 2010
Author: storyofstuffproject
Duration: 7:47
Description:
The Story of Electronics, releasing Tuesday, NOVEMBER 9, employs the Story of Stuff style to explore the high-tech revolution's collateral damage—25 million tons of e-waste and counting, poisoned workers and a public left holding the bill. Host Annie Leonard takes viewers from the mines and factories where our gadgets begin to the horrific backyard recycling shops in China where many end up. The film concludes with a call for a green 'race to the top' where designers compete to make long-lasting, toxic-free products that are fully and easily recyclable. Our production partner on the electronics film is the Electronics TakeBack Coalition, which promotes green design and responsible recycling in the electronics industry. And, for all you fact checkers out there,http://www.storyofstuff.org/2011/02/13/story-of-electronics/

Apr 23, 2012 - nope no i dont your views on recycling are false, misguided and poisonous. the take back way dosent work because they still get the waste and they are less inclined to recycle it so they ship it to china, asia ect. recycling dosent ship it to china to be smashed up, its acctually the companies. Adam Minter, author of the Shanghai Scrap blog, says he found boxes of defective but unused electronic components discarded at Guiyu - still in the original packaging from HP, Panasonic and Samsung.
sayagainBOOM Says:
Apr 23, 2012 - and he comes accross tickets on the shipments that say they come directly from the companies all the time. again you have very miss guided and false views about recycling and you people are the reason this problem is on going.

Apr 23, 2012 - Recycling electronics isn't always convenient and many people don't know where to take them. However, there is a great joy in repurposing electronics, too. I have an old Android-based smartphone that no longer has an account. It does, however, still function via wifi and have a great and flexible interface. Bam. Instant touch-screen home-automation control panel. By repurposing you not only extend life-cycles, you reduce consumption. It saves money, too.

Apr 24, 2012 - that is a clever solution, take back laws... unfortunately its far too totalitarian for the US. I am living the change that I want to see: not submitting to advertisers, keeping my 'dumb' phone for years, fixing my car... I've heard about legislation to end manufacture of 100-watt incandescent light bulbs which I see as a plucky step on the road to tyranny. This is a good video series to raise awareness but it fails when it gets preachy. We need transparency and scientific awareness most.

Joru666 Says:
Apr 30, 2012 - 5:34 "it would be cheaper for them..." lady, in fact enforcing something on manufacturers is only going to make you paymore for the product. Do you think taxing a manufacturer is anything else than taxing a customer?
HexagonHeat83 Says:
May 2, 2012 - Printed Circuit Boards and solder contain less chemicals than in the past. RoHS directive also reduces solder toxicity. It improves daily, there are many scientists and engineers working on reducing the toxic substances in the material but it is difficult to find direct green substitutes for certain chemicals.Computers are modular by design but you can't go out and buy a single transistor for a processor, there are billions in there! Perhaps you want everyone to go back to using vacuum tubes?

May 10, 2012 - What do you mean? Annie Leonard is trying to kill us? Because that's the correct POV.
OneTheOnlyOne Says:
May 10, 2012 - The Government Knows Exactly Whats Going On With All These Bad Electronics,Food,Water,Skin Products, Etc.... They're Not Stupid. They Are Trying To Slowly Kill Us. Or Atleast Make Us Stupid That Way They Can Have Better Control On The Population.
UpHooked Says:
May 11, 2012 - \shows this society is fucked and people only want for themselves. They do not care for anything or anybody else.

May 19, 2012 - The government has the school system for better control of the population. The electronics aren't going to kill us and if you think they are then stop using your computer.

mmille10 Says:
May 19, 2012 - I saw this in The Story of Stuff as well. Why does she get rid of the stuff she bought 18 months after she bought it? That's 1-1/2 years. I use stuff up. I don't hold on to it forever, but I try to make it last a while, like 4 years, or longer. I like the idea of "greener" electronics that pollute less, but I don't think everyone can afford that. If customers demand it, the electronics companies will offer models that pollute less, but don't shut out lower income people.
e12icaphoo Says:
May 22, 2012 - "Design for the dump means making stuff to be thrown away quickly. Today's electronics are hard to upgrade, easy to break, and impractical to repair!" -serious problem that many people should be more aware for.
albertescamilla Says:
