Title: Rendering in passes in Maya
Added: Aug 5, 2007
Author: PolyNurb
Duration: 5:35
Description:
This is a quick down and dirty way to render out your CG scene in Maya in passes using Maya's render layers function. I don't cover the actual render layers in detail or the different types of passes you can do. It's a very basic introduction to get a person compositing together the passes in Shake or After Effects.

Apr 8, 2008 - Well what I would suggest is to just not use layers...and render it all out in one pass then...if that's what you want. Now if your using hardware particles for the rain..I would just make the rain part a seperate scene and render it out in a scene by itself...with alpha of course. You will have to simply composite the rain over the entire other render in something like After Effects, but it won't be difficult at all.

Oct 19, 2008 - Hey! anyone knows how can I render objects viewed by some other camera? I'd like just to render the objects within a cone and nothing else. How can I do that?
roxonogueira Says:
Oct 20, 2008 - yeah! but I have one doubt! imagine I have a bottle on a table in a layer... I'd like to make the layer dissappear but leave the table...will the shadows fade too? do I have to make 2 occlusion layers? or by alpha?

Dec 13, 2008 - Is there anyone who knows how to use a spotlight to make objects dissapear instead of illuminating them? What I really needed is to make objects fade away as the spotlight moves. I tried to use a surface luminance node to try that effect..I think it's possible to divide the objects into diferent render layers and then composite them taking advantage of the alpha between layers. My problem is, whenever I try to use a light connected to a transparency channel in a shader, the alpha is not showing.

Jan 7, 2009 - roxongueira I would just animate the visibility for the object in the objects attributes....

Jun 25, 2010 - Where did the Render Layer's Render Pass options go in Maya 2010? Used to be as easy as a RMB > Occlusion pass.

Apr 6, 2008 - Hey I'm having a huuuuge problem with maya 2008, using layers. I'm trying to render rain with maya hardware and everything else with maya software. I'm using a layer override with maya hardware. Ideally i would love to render the master layer all together and not have to composite afterwards. I don't even want to use layers... Please help!
