Title: 2001 Daytona 500 Last Lap & Post Race

Added: Aug 2, 2009

Description:
Last lap of race & post race coverage live coverage. There are lots of posts of this race here, but they always seem to be cut up or they have some kind of "poignant" music covering up the audio, so having my own tape of the whole race, I decided we needed an unedited version as it was live on TV at the time it happened w. the original audio the victory lane & the commentary before everyone knew how serious the whole deal was. The only things I cut out were the commercials & the tag at the end closing the broadcast and some brief stuff (part of the field rundown) to keep this under 10 minutes. There is an interesting roof-top (NOT in-car) camera shot of the crash from Earnhardt's car that I didn't even remember and hadn't seen since (I hadn't looked at this tape since it happened). As I remember watching this live, after the interview w. Ken Schrader, I said "he's dead" and didn't turn the TV off after Fox went off the air, but switched over to ESPN and waited for the inevitable announcement. I wasn't myself an Earnhardt fan. I rooted for Ward Burton, who had a strong car that day and looked like a threat, but was caught up in the big wreck earlier in the race. That he wasn't a fluke was proved when he won the next year. But even though Earnhardt wasn't my favorite driver, and sometimes didn't like what he did on the track (mainly wrecking Terry Labonte at Bristol & stealing that race, after which I hated him for a while) he seemed to be a good guy off the track and this was a sad day in racing. Also interesting to note is that Fox "missed" the finish of the race, having the camera on DW when Michael's car crossed the finish line. This was an incredible bonehead move, but something that seems to be a plague in dramatic races on TV. It happened in the 1992 Indy 500, the closest finish in that race's history, when the director went to a shot from above the flag stand and, as the cars went over the finish line nose to nose, they were covered by the checkered flag waving and no one on TV saw who won! LOL! A lesson to TV directors of close & dramatic races. Keep the camera on the race track, not on relatives in the booth, on wives in the pits or the guy waving the checkered flag.

Feb 26, 2012 - Every year (for reasons only God knows) I watch this just hoping that it turns out differently but it never does. Schrader knew what had actually happened but I think he was thinking this wasn't real and was trying to make it not real.

Feb 27, 2012 - If Jr. won the race his dad died... you finish this one.

tenerbri13 Says:

Mar 5, 2012 - It's a damn shame to see how happy Waltrip is just to see him crushed.

TheTornado1999 Says:

Mar 16, 2012 - @7:18 There is a cloud shaped like the #3 R.I.P Dale Sr.

thephantomeagle2 Says:

Mar 18, 2012 - D.W was crying because his little brother won the race. He had no clue, as the rest of the racing world, that Dale was in the serious condition he was in.

tenerbri13 Says:

Mar 18, 2012 - I meant Michael. I knew DW was crying for Michael but seeing Michael in victory lane all hopped up is what I was referring to.

Barcenas121 Says:

Mar 20, 2012 - I like how michael doesn't feel the piece of confetti flapping on his head.

TheDeathMonkeyShow Says:

Mar 30, 2012 - what about it?

WoodyWV38 Says:

Apr 1, 2012 - He's the man in Black, his name is Dale, fast as lightning, and mean as Hell! Never forget this day. I was worried because Darrell was worried. Then 3 days later they buried Dale on my 28th Birthday. Worst B-Day ever!

autumnlynne76 Says:

Apr 22, 2012 - Thank you for sharing this. I'll never forget this day, but seeing it again brought back a flood of memories. And normally I'd agree about them not filming the end of the race, but had they, we never would have seen that truly heartfelt concern that DW had for Dale, along with the emotions he was feeling for his brother. I also think Schrader knew that Dale was either dead or at the very least, unconscious and in serious condition.

nula07 Says:

May 3, 2012 - Could you goofs please stop? The race was live on Fox, race fans saw every minute. And news reports, up to the minute. We know what we saw. Jr's running, not about what you'd like, ask Jr. Kenny saw what he did, what you "also think" is irrelevant. This isn't "auto racing class". You either know, or you don't. Was 11 years ago, historical, it's all out there. ''

nula07 Says:

May 3, 2012 - OMG, stop, you heard DW, I hope Dale is OK. Anyone who knows racing knew that crash was serious. Really, why are you here? Yammering about stuff of which you have no clue? What?

mreed91 Says:

May 3, 2012 - I don't know if you've seen the in-car post crash photos. His car had blood inside it. The seatbelt was cut. The steering wheel was bent in. 180mph crash means pain. He had a basilar skull fracture. That means the skull was broken, which means the skin was broken, which means brain matter and blood was pouring from his head. You would see that if you looked into his car, as Kenny did.

mreed91 Says:

May 3, 2012 - There's a backwards 3, or a capital E in the sky. Either way, it's kind of a strange coincidence.

nula07 Says:

May 11, 2012 - Really? Let's go back in time, interviews with Waltrip, he hated Dale Earnhardt. They were not friends. It's out there somewhere, mid-90's, maybe TNN. Consider the source, it's DW. Search it out, it's known.

nula07 Says:

May 12, 2012 - Settle down, way too all over the place. Earnhardt, NASCAR. Dale mentioned Senna in one of his last interviews, so all you got was to run with that, and be loud. It's NASCAR, it is what it is, many beloved are gone. Look at Kyle Petty, his son Adam was killed in a crash in NH, and yet Kyle is still carrying on, loving this sport. Keep it small; you know a lot of racing info, big whoop. Quiet.

nula07 Says:

May 12, 2012 - One would hope just fine, crash not his fault whatsoever. You seem to have a problem with a well-known, often repeated matter from 2001. You have anything new to offer?

RyanTheIncredible882 Says:

May 12, 2012 - Woah, damn. I'm surprised I even made a comment like that. Obviously Sterling didn't turn into Dale intentionally, therefore not his fault. Whatever, the important thing is that NASCAR will never have to suffer a loss of this magnitude again with the ginormous improvements in safety as a result of this tragedy.

RyanTheIncredible882 Says:

May 12, 2012 - A lot of people are saying that they can see a backwards 3 or a cursive E at 7:18. I also kind of see an angel or maybe a dove, getting ready to carry Dale up to heaven.

nula07 Says:

May 13, 2012 - That would be your take. DW knew; Sterling was in the race, and had absolutely nothing to do with the crash. Girl, know of what you speak before you do. Your "but I would"; telling. Look stuff up, you do have resource access about this race. Look it up, and then you'll know, nothing to do with Sterling Marlin , nothing to do with you. Cause and manner of death are out there, your drama is...what?

nula07 Says:

May 13, 2012 - Really? Michael wrote a book? Did not know that. Long-time NASCAR fan, Lots of NASCAR news along the way hard to read, Neil Bonnett, Adam Petty, Dale Earnhardt. Other books written about NASCR racing, struggles. DW hated Earnhardt; Earnhardt was Mikey's boss. Mikey...a whole different discussion. It's all a bit complex. The world of NASCAR racing today is very different from the 1970's, since I've been following. Wasn't the world of "poor me, I'll write a book".

nula07 Says:

May 13, 2012 - Or, perhaps NASCAR, and families of racers will suffer loss, one never knows. Better safety measures are in place. Racin' is racin'. Let the racers sort it out, and do what they do. And work out worries within their franchise. I'm a watcher, a lover of auto racing. Thanks to the internet, you can nickel and dime it to death; result remains the same. Earnhardt died. An aside....I was at my Mom's home watching, she was 88. Her reaction to the crash, "Oh, dear God, is he ok?"

nula07 Says:

May 13, 2012 - Girl, nice goof, sorry you have nothing to do.

nekidbob Says:

May 13, 2012 - So whats your point, DW knew from his experience as driver how potentially bad the wreck was that's all I'm saying. I'm sure Sterling's mind set was he didn't cause the wreck. But I guarantee it's still in the back of his mind. He wouldn't be human if it isn't. Go TROLL somewhere else!!!

StockFan14 Says:

May 18, 2012 - You can just tell in Schrader's interview that he knew what had happened, and that it wasn't good.
