Title: When Will We Discover the Extraterrestrials?
Added: Aug 13, 2008
Author: GoogleTechTalks
Duration: 48:4
Description:
Google TechTalkApril 24, 2007Speaker: Dr. Seth ShostakThe scientific hunt for extraterrestrial intelligence is now into its fifth decade, and we still haven't uncovered a confirmed peep from any cosmic company. Could this mean that finding aliens, even if they exist, is a project for the ages -- one that might take centuries or longer?New technologies for use in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) suggest that, despite the continued dearth of signals from other societies, there is good reason to expect that success might not be far off -- that we might find evidence of sophisticated civilizations within a few decades. Why this is so, what contact would tell us, and what such a discovery would mean, are the subject of this talk on the continuing efforts to establish our place in the universe of thinking beings. This Space Exploration series talk was hosted by Boris Debic.

Apr 8, 2012 - And you are just the average brainwashed person who needs to learn how to spell.
izelxx1 Says:
Apr 9, 2012 - A very good talk with lotsa good points. I think it is kind of audacious to think human consciousness is going to be easily replicated in digital hardware.
logybear86 Says:
Apr 13, 2012 - How do you know Nibiru is on its way? Are you tracking it or something? Got any evidence to support that claim?Judging by your post bringing up the most popular conspiracy of recent times, as well as pushing the most ridiculous of them all, Nibiru, it seems you're as much of a sheep as anyone else. You'll obviously fall for any bullshit story just because it's an opposing view to the media's.
Lexxie45 Says:
Apr 14, 2012 - I am not "tracking" Nibiru and I don't have any physical evidence just what I've read in about 20 books that included it and its possible orbit.I didn't get my information about it from the Internet doomsday websites.I always question everything and try to prove it to myself if I can.I've seen and read enough proof about the conspiracy you mentioned to accept the fact that it was staged.Of course you are entitled to your own opinion too.
AquiHeme Says:
Apr 15, 2012 - Yes, that is the truth. We can´t not find what doesn´t exist.
plummer89 Says:
Apr 17, 2012 - Really? Billions of stars of stars in our galaxies, billions of galaxies, and you simply think we are "it"?
great112211 Says:
Apr 17, 2012 - Ok, they do exist, but how can you be so sure they're more advanced then us or even predatory like the aliens in the Aliens 2 (the James Cameron one). Barely any alien talks or movies portray aliens as friendly creatures or harmless herbivores and I find that quite intriguing.
myusernameisluc Says:
Apr 20, 2012 - What, he is not intelligent because he got some historical fact wrong, a fact that isn't even relevant to the point he was trying to make? Is it because he offended your heritage or some shit? Get over yourself.
LackadaisicalE Says:
Apr 24, 2012 - If you look at evolution on Earth, from the early cambrain sea over Trex to us, you find that the smartest, most complex species are all predatory carni- or omnivores. It probably takes a higher level of energy intake to produce the energy output our systems and brains demand. That would be a universal truth, and so, it is likely that any other intelligent and dominant lifeform (dominance in the natural habitat is required for long technological development) is rather like us.
DonMega187 Says:
Apr 28, 2012 - yep. but it could be they've outgrown this by technological means and evolved to be able to control their violent nature. perhaps they just grow their food. or then it's indeed war of the worlds, who knows...
DonMega187 Says:
Apr 28, 2012 - it doesn't matter how we portrait them. only thing that matters is the truth. there's probably all kinds of aliens, some peaceful, some not. let's just hope if ever we meet it'll not be the wrong kind
DonMega187 Says:
Apr 28, 2012 - but the one's following mainstream media are the real sheeples with no brains of their own. always practise independent thinking, but of course it doesn't mean to jump on some wacky ideas either without questioning them even further
DonMega187 Says:
Apr 28, 2012 - consciousness or awareness is just a byproduct of millions of connections in brains linking together and referencing. it is not the computing power, but methodology though and how to properly test it. it's found animals are also more or less self aware. a dog more so than a rat. so we have to study those animals first and therefore our future computers/robots may be only little self aware until there's more brainpower addedthey may match us in processing power easily, but not in consciousness
DonMega187 Says:
Apr 28, 2012 - í'd say that's pretty hardcore studying already. if there's any reference from old times to this they must have talked about an asteroid though, not a planet. it's not long ago when we were still not able to categorize pluto correctly, so the difference to ancient people were even less obvious. we know there is few objects coming closeby even now so it's not surprising things are on collision course with earth sooner or later. but surely not in 2012 as some lunatics are predicting
LackadaisicalE Says:
Apr 28, 2012 - Yeah they killed all their animals ages ago and have been vegetarians ever since hehe nah I get what youre saying, theyd prolly just pop some energy pill once every forthnight. Yeah, who knows :)
YesIamJames Says:
Apr 30, 2012 - I think 24 years is extremely conservative. 3 - 5 years tops.My video: Aliens, exoplanets and space travel. watch?v=JjN4cIJHx1Q
YesIamJames Says:
Apr 30, 2012 - I can certainly see computers becoming better at "thinking" than us and more efficient eventually, after all neurons contain a lot of material unnecessary for computation such as 3.1 billion nucleotides most of which don't help control the brain. That being said Moore's law cannot continue forever we are still going to be limited by the size of atoms etc.
YesIamJames Says:
Apr 30, 2012 - The problem I see with the Drake equation is that it doesn't seem to factor in aliens expanding and colonizing other star systems. This could equate to an alien species controlling potentially an entire galaxy, maybe over a billion planets within maybe 1 - 2 million years. This is a HUGE margin of error.
makdrumz Says:
May 3, 2012 - I think 3-5 years are enough for the next gen console to come out but not for this kind of research. I also believe that technology on earth is far more advanced than what come out in the market and that is because of the production cost and the market itself. So that taken as a parameter maybe NASA who is constantly roaming outside earth and takes a hell lot better pictures does know something more. Well...We can only speculate ;)
YesIamJames Says:
May 3, 2012 - I've been helping Kepler and Seti recently and I've got a pretty good grasp of molecular biology, cosmology and planet formation. Understandably people think I'm crazy but from my knowledge 3 - 5 years seems about right, guess we'll just have to wait.
TheTruthHurtsEvil Says:
May 10, 2012 - not the right question.
harmageden Says:
May 11, 2012 - feel that it is hard enough dealing with everyday issues and problems , without having to delve into the unknown and theorising on what might be .If their are extraterrestrials and inter-dimensional travellers , who have the knowledge and use of time and relative dimension in space devices , then we will have to wait and see what they want and how they intend dealing with the serious problems , facing mankind today .
DimmedDiamond Says:
May 16, 2012 - Why are people "assuming" or holding religious like beliefs that as big as the universe is, that it's big enough to warrant at least one other alien species? There's not evidence for it. It may very well be that the Universe is millions of times smaller than what is needed for the chance of one other alien species to have been present (let alone currently).
Scotchy71 Says:
May 29, 2012 - i want to know "if there was a single solitary rock that came from mars" how do they know it was from mars ???? i smell a nasa rat?
