Description:
Drawing on his experiences picking up roadkill, feeding swine, and castrating a lamb with his teeth, Mike Rowe, host of Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs, discusses how modern American culture belittles necessary labor.EG is the celebration of the American entertainment industry. Since 1984, Richard Saul Wurman has created extraordinary gatherings about learning and understanding. EG is a rich extension of these ideas - a conference that explores the attitude of understanding in music, film, television, radio, technology, advertising, gaming, interactivity and the web - The Entertainment GatheringMike Rowe has had more jobs than you. In fact, Mike has had more jobs than anyone. As the creator and executive producer of Discovery Channels Emmy-nominated series Dirty Jobs With Mike Rowe, Mike has spent years traveling the country, working as an apprentice on more than 200 jobs that most people would go out of their way to avoid. From coal mining to roustabouting, maggot farming to sheep castrating, Mike has worked in just about every industry and filmed the show in almost every state, celebrating the hard-working Americans who make civilized life possible for the rest of us.On Labor Day 2008, Mike launched a Web site called mikeroweWORKS.com, where skilled labor and hard work are celebrated in the hope of calling attention to the steady decline in the trades and bolstering enrollment in trade schools and technical colleges. In addition to Dirty Jobs and his mikeroweWORKS endeavor, Mike is the voice of Deadliest Catch and the national spokesman for Ford Trucks. He has traveled extensively for Discovery Channel, hosting Shark Week in South Africa, where he field-tested a steel-mesh shark-suit, and Egypt Week Live, where he opened and explored newly discovered tombs in the Valley of the Golden Mummies.

SongSwan Says:

Apr 10, 2012 - What we have in America today is a large segment of the population that is pampered and useless that depends on another segment of the population for their very existence and everything in life that they take for granted...when this house of cards comes tumbling down it will be those who do the"dirty" jobs that will become valuable and important memebers of society while the little techies, geeks, manginas, yuppies and sissies will sit around babbling and trying to get somebody on their cell phone.

punka92 Says:

Apr 12, 2012 - As a second generation Painter(Not paintings but walls) so that last part really hit me, i've always been proud of my father slaving away up and down ladders in rooms that are filled with every kind of dust know to man with chemicals that will destroy your lungs and body if handled wrong, just to put food on the table and a roof over my head. So proud that I wanted to do the same, now we work together every day and I wouldn't trade it for anything!

Fleefles Says:

Apr 14, 2012 - I'm sure dogs and cats don't enjoy having their reproductive organs taken out even with anesthesia and pain medicine; it still hurts them. Would you suggest it is wrong for people to fix their pet because they wouldn't get themselves neutered?

mjh01210 Says:

Apr 21, 2012 - You realize of course that the other side of the coin is that the people you disparage who sit at desks are also regular people and, despite what society would have you think, are most of the time quite happy people who enjoy what they do, and are capable of independent thought. If the message you got from this video is that people who sit at desks are "sheep" and should be thought less of then you missed the entire point.

patrimacc Says:

Apr 22, 2012 - No Mike Rowe knows what the problem is but doesnt know the answer. We need somebody with answers but Mike is doing a godd job educating people on these problems

dstriz09 Says:

Apr 22, 2012 - Thanks for the SPOILER ALERT. Now I know how the 6th Sense ends.

misterbee180 Says:

Apr 22, 2012 - I think it's important to recognize that while it's good to have people to do the "dirty jobs" he talks about, it's also good to have people who can do the jobs which make our world run, which currently are those "sissies, yuppies, geeks, etc." that you talk about. The world is no longer entirely physical and the people who realize this and do the jobs associated with digitalizing our world have a profound impact on the day to day lives of everyone, including those dirty job doers of the past.

ObamaFansAreIgnorant Says:

Apr 23, 2012 - Well put, I agree entirely

BuhBuhRoccoli Says:

Apr 23, 2012 - Among all the politicians today, I think Mike Rowe would be an incredible member of congress / president. Who else understands the common person better than him? Not to mention he is well educated and spoken.

LebeninBinaer Says:

Apr 23, 2012 - SPOILER ALERT

SongSwan Says:

Apr 23, 2012 - Well when those sissies and geeks start having respect for people who do the jobs that require more than a wall outlet or a mouse then perhaps you may have a point, the world is simply plugged in to a fantasy at this point,we are only one major disaster away from the past as you put it.The systems we havwe given ourselves over to are fragile and exist and function only within cyberspace...and as of today that is still not the real world.

electray Says:

Apr 23, 2012 - I think most Geeks actually have a fair bit of respect for trade skills, after all, geeks basically employ their own trade skills that just happen to be tied to a desk. Average office worker that basically do everything on a spreadsheet/power point, probably do not. I would say this applies doubly for management/self important positions.

MakeULaf5illy Says:
