May 21, 2011 - A real good source on Woody's life and work is "Woody Guthrie: A Life" by Joe Klein. On page 472 there is a handwritten version from 1940. It is signed Mary G. with a sidenote that it is the original version. In it the line "if this land is made for you and me' was written over 'God blessed America for Me". The stop sign verse is there but it started "a big high wall there, it tried to stop me'; so too is the relief office. A little different but present. Every performer leavea a mark.

May 21, 2011 - The only people Woody didn't want to take over the country were fascists.

Jul 4, 2011 - Thank you. This is my favorite and I sing it whenever and wherever I play. I particularly like the last verse. It is timeless.

sighedeffects Says:

Sep 20, 2011 - Maybe you should read up on Woody Guthrie. Guthrie wrote those verses and felt them completely. Are you also aware the Pledge of Allegiance was written by a Socialist?

darlincommitme Says:

Oct 10, 2011 - This ARE original verses, they just didn't sing teach them to us in school- Guthrie was a radical.

solidaritet2010 Says:

Nov 8, 2011 - It may be Woody's verses after he was hospitalized. Was this recorded for sing along with Mitch Miller?

BobJohnson1945 Says:

Nov 8, 2011 - For the original words see Woody's handwriten notes on page 472 of "Woody Guthrie: A Life" by Joe Klein. I'm way too young for Mitch Miller.

rogerroswell6 Says:

Nov 9, 2011 - You probably wrote for Mitch Miller. When's the last time you fed a hungry man? or fought the corporate greed? You made a tourism jingle out of this sacred song of the disenfranchised.

Apr 8, 2012 - THE original lyrics.*Verse 4Was a big high wall there that tried to stop me. A sign was painted said: private property. But on the back side it didn't say nothing. God blessed America for me.Verse 6One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple by the Relief Office I saw my people. As they stood hungry, I stood there wondering if God Blessed America for me.*SOURCE: This land is your land: Woody Guthrie & the journey of an American folksong, pg 16. -Robert Santelli, 2012.

Apr 21, 2012 - @ seandouglass - Maybe if you pulled your head out of your Neo-Con butt you would not be smelling so much Sh--. "This Land" was written as a liberal folk anthem. Woody Guthrie would have been a fan of Occupy Wall Street and not the Tea Party. He was a Socialist and proud of it. By the way, learn to spell, or at least learn the difference between "trader" and "traitor."

May 17, 2012 - if you think this song is a patriotic song you didn't get the point

May 23, 2012 - oh just stfu..its as patriotic as you or me

TheSkysarah Says:

May 24, 2012 - A great song and commentary. When it was written America was not the land of the blacks, hispanics, the oakies, and the arkies or any minorities and people of color. When the 4th and 6th verses are omitted it's a child's song and one of the white only culture of the 1930's (and later in time, unfortunately).

BobJohnson1945 Says:

May 24, 2012 - There is a great book of recent origin: The Social Animal, by David Brooks, worth reading, even a couple of times. It is very hard to change human nature, but it can be done. Unfortunately, very few humans make the effort. One day ...

TheSkysarah Says:

May 25, 2012 - Bob1945...Thanks for the referral. I'll get the book...it sounds like my kind of reading. One thing I've found though is that I can't change anyone but myself but maybe that's enough. And I can always hope for the best in people and the basic good in universal human values.

TheSkysarah Says:

May 25, 2012 - thanks Bob1945. It's my kind of reading and I'll check it out. I posted in another place that I find that the only one I can change is myself but hope for the best in others and that the basic good in universal human values will someday prevail.
