Somewhere along the line I think we all realize that a song doesn't need to intricate and technically difficult to be a great song. People can familiarize with simple melodies and harmonies (hence "folk music"). It's not hard to tell a song that has a heart and soul apart from it's soulless brother. That's the difference between this and commercial pop music.
