Jul 7, 2011 - The thing is here in Holland we have 402 people living per square KM, comparing to USA"s 36 per square KM, because we have over 10 times more people living in our small country, all cities are located only a few KM from each other. And the highest point in our country is around 300m above sea level. So it's mostly because of the close proximity of other cities & destinations, and the flat country that makes the bike so popular in the Netherlands. It's not just that we don't want to get fat....

Jul 12, 2011 - wow that looks like bike heaven. the best part about riding a bike is not paying for gas. in a city like this you can probably get anywhere you want to go and not spend a dime, or whatever it is over in europe. euro?

Jul 22, 2011 - 10lettername, is not ignorant, they are honest. Why dont you just own up to it! I live in Australia, and we are by in large obese and lazy and drive around in cars. That is what I hate about it here. Everyone knows that Americans are GUN NUTS! American culture is the worst thing about Australia. Cars, highways, no space for bikes and McDonalds. America= stupid!

KrunchyJD Says:

Jul 22, 2011 - Not Aresholes, more like honest people look at America, do you think you could learn something from the Dutch? I live in Australia, and I am not so ignorant as to say that we could learn a lot from The Netherlands, and their bicycle use! The Dutch Rule!

Jul 24, 2011 - ive never owned a car and wont either! im 49 and ride a bike....BIKES RULE!! CARS DROOL

Aug 7, 2011 - And I thought my country, Denmark, was a bike country. Okay, we are not that far behind the Dutch, I guess, but I sure hope we reach the same level as Holland one day. Maybe if we moved many of the parking lots for cars under ground, there would be even more space for the many bikes of Copenhagen.Way to go, Dutchmen:)

CaptainChaos Says:

Aug 22, 2011 - Very nice video! One small point though: it is actually not mandatory to pass any kind of test (although kids do get traffic training in school), nor is there such as a thing as a bicycling licence.

Oct 19, 2011 - If all those people stopped bicycling and replaced them with cars - all of the neitherlands would be on great big parking lot... Like the USA....

09conrado Says:

Mar 5, 2012 - I don't get it why this should turn into a 'bash America' thing. It's about cycling. Apparently it's an emotional subject. And Roger: Yes, our country is flat and close-knit, but people cycle in Switzerland, and cycle a lot less in New York which is also flat and a lot more densely populated. It's not about who's better, it's about deciding to make the choice for cycling or not. Build it right and people will come. It's expensive, but cheaper than not building it.
